💝 Mother’s Day is on Sunday — what’re you serving up?

Plus, controversial state bills make the cut and demolition at a beloved Downtown spot.

Welcome to Monday, Miami.

Hard to believe we’re already in May 2021, huh? It feels like it was just yesterday that The New Tropic was stockpiling local places to do holiday shopping and rounding up readers’ positive memories of 2020

Now look at us: Just days away from Cinco de Mayo and with no midnight curfew in sight. We LOVE to see it, folks. 😍

Speaking of things we love to see, we’ve got some tips on where to treat your mother for food this Sunday. We’ve also got some things we’re not quite as jazzed about, but think that you — our beloved New Tropic readers — ought to be aware of.

💧 What Miami is talking about

Show us a better place to rise and grind than Miami — go on, we’ll wait. 😎 | Want to see your own picture in this space? Tag either #thenewtropic or @thenewtropic to be featured in our Instagram of the Day. (📸: @ronancolinmiami)

🗳 Florida election supervisors are already speaking out about a newly passed bill that places additional restrictions on returning vote-by-mail ballots. Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer — who also happens to be the president of the Florida Supervisors of Elections — decried the state legislature’s move to reduce the amount of time Florida voters have to request mail-in ballots as well as limit the use of drop boxes.

“We should be looking for cost-effective ways to expand their use, including the use of secure 24-hour drop boxes with camera surveillance,” Latimer said. “Instead, the new legislation prohibits that.”

In other news...

➡️ Speaking of new laws that seem to disenfranchise rather than empower constituents, Florida lawmakers passed legislation banning transgender female athletes from participating in school sports last week. Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he will sign the measure into law, claiming “We’re going to protect our girls.” Miami New Times has a timeline detailing the discriminatory proposal's history and how it was thought to be defeated before returning at the eleventh hour. 🎰 In an unsurprising but disappointing development, demolition is underway at 777 International Mall. Billionaire real estate developer Moishe Mana owns the iconic Flagler Street building’s property, and there is reportedly no construction permit signaling what will stand there next. The vacant mall had become a center of activity for Miami’s creative community in recent years: Besides housing storefronts for independent initiatives such as Dale Zine and Concreta Sala, the spot also hosted underground parties by the likes of Terrestrial Funk as well as art exhibitions. 💝 Mother’s Day is on Sunday — have you made restaurant reservations yet? If not, Eater Miami has a rundown on “11 Impressive Mother’s Day Meals in Miami.” As my mother always likes to say, ”You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” Take the hint and treat your special lady to someplace sweet. 🤗 (Eater Miami)
