💦 Miami dries off after a water-soaked weekend

Plus, fewer freshmen are enrolling at Florida colleges and high hopes for a tourism boom.

By Zach Schlein

Welcome to Tuesday.

How about that weather, huh? Sunday was the chilliest day in recent Miami memory with lows in the 50s; although it isn’t projected to stay that crisp for the remainder of the week, temps are thankfully expected to keep cooler than usual across the 305.

Unfortunately, the weather is bringing more than just cold fronts with it...

🌊 Miami got wet ‘n wild over the weekend: A combination of heavy rainfall and the seasonal king tide left much of the 305 drenched during these past few days. While some made it out with little more than soaked clothes, others weren’t so lucky and saw substantial property damage due to the floods. 🛬 As of yesterday, international travelers fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can freely fly in and out of the U.S. This change in policy is expected to buoy Miami International Airport and the local tourism economy, both of which suffered heavy financial hits due to the pandemic. “We can’t see a complete recovery until the full international market is back in Miami,” Rolando Aedo, the COO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the Miami Herald. “This is truly a watershed moment.” (Miami Herald)

🎓 Undergraduate enrollment is down at Florida schools and universities. The Sunshine State’s numbers are consistent with a countrywide trend that’s seen fewer Americans pursue secondary education across the board. As reported by WLRN, “A recent study released by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that so far this fall, undergraduate enrollment is down in Florida by 2.6% since last year. That compares with a 3.2% drop in undergraduate enrollment nationally.” (WLRN)

🗳 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has formally filed paperwork to campaign for re-election in next year’s gubernatorial race. Meanwhile, a clear frontrunner has yet to emerge from the crowded field of potential Democratic challengers. (CBS Miami)
