😋 How to get a vegan Philly Cheesesteak in PDX
Plus, a deeply zen video.
Hot dog, would you look at that, we’re almost done with January.
This week we covered the burning question of Portland’s pizza quality, boozy boba tea, Kachka reopening, and the good deeds accomplished by a cutout of the latest Bernie Sanders meme.
In today’s roundup we’re talking about: Who’s getting vaccinated right now, the background of the man the mayor pepper sprayed, Nora the polar bear, and Philly Cheesesteaks — but without the steak. Scroll on for more details.
Today our Bridgeliner Unabridged members get to see who correctly guessed this week’s I Spy location. Wanna join the fun? Become a member today.

3 things to know today
🌶️ The man Mayor Ted Wheeler pepper sprayed is the heir to the Alpenrose Dairy business. In an updated police report, Cary Cadonau, 48, was identified as the man who confronted Wheeler outside a McMenamins last weekend — and who was pepper sprayed by the mayor during the encounter. Cadonau went back to the restaurant to ask for video surveillance footage and the mayor’s meal receipt “because it would show how much alcohol the mayor consumed that evening,” the report said via KGW. Read the rest of the story here.
🚨The driver who plowed through PDX pedestrians and cyclists earlier this week is facing murder and assault allegations. After injuring nine people and killing a 77-year-old woman, Paul Rivas crashed his vehicle and was arrested. While a motive for the event hasn’t been established yet, officials said they “don’t believe Rivas acted on any bias, terrorist or political motivation.” The rest of the details can be found here from The Oregonian.
💉 Prioritizing vaccinations for educators may be delaying the same for PDX healthcare workers. While tens of thousands of healthcare workers are eligible for the vaccine in Portland, they may be looking at a longer wait before they can get the shot. Vaccinations for healthcare workers began back in December, but “health care workers who aren’t affiliated with one of the five major healthcare giants in the Portland region have had difficulties scheduling vaccinations,” the Oregonian reports. See the full report here.

😋 This is NOT a drill — vegan Philly Cheesesteaks will be here next month. Operating as a pop-up at Mockingbird PDX (which offers vegan fried "chicken" sandwiches and other deliciousness on their menu), Buddy’s Steaks will be slinging thick, hefty, melt-in-your-mouth Philly Cheesesteaks starting Feb. 1, until closing time or they run out. Here is where you can get details on the upcoming menu.
🐟 Recapture your sense of zen with this video from the Portland Japanese Garden. And follow it up with this one featuring the gigantic Koi chilling out and swimming around.
💖 Nora the polar bear will be coming back to Portland in March. Read about Nora's troubles and triumphs here.
