Welcome to Friday, folks.

Today we’re starting off with a big question: Have we as a society forgotten how to listen? And what can we do about that?

We’re working on solving that by partnering with Listen Courageously — and you can be a part of it. Listen Courageously combines an award-winning film with transformative virtual workshops on the power of empathic listening. We’re teaming up with The New Tropic’s sister publications to host one of those workshops on May 13 — here’s how to get your ticket.

We’ll gather (virtually!) with readers from our sister newsletters across the nation in Portland, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Orlando. The goal? To become more aware of our listening blocks so that we can better engage in heart-centered conversations that lead to mutual respect and understanding.

The New Tropic wrote about Listen Courageously and Juliana Tafur, the woman behind the initiative and documentary, earlier this month — you can learn more about her and get an idea of what the event’s all about right here. (P.S. Club New Tropic members get 20% off — scroll down to your member section for a discount code.)

But that’s not all this newsletter has — let’s take a look at what’s happening in the 305 as we close out the week...

💧 What Miami is talking about

Artist and designer Alex Leshansky has been using the @36daysoftype exercise as an opportunity to illustrate some of Florida’s most colorful critters. Not only are his drawings beautiful, but they’re educational to boot. 😍 | Want to see your own picture in this space? 🖋 Today is the last day of Florida’s regular legislative session, and for better or worse, state lawmakers have been quite busy. As of writing, and in no particular order, the Florida legislature appears poised to pass the following:

Phew! If there’s anything we missed, please let us know. Keep in mind that the unexpected has become the norm rather than the exception in American politics over the last half-decade — some of these proposals are still subject to change.

In other news...

💃 There are a whole lot of sounds swirling around Miami this weekend: III Points x Secret Project is taking place in Virginia Key today and tomorrow, as is Bayfront Jazz Festival. The latter is going down at — you guessed it — Bayfront Park and will feature performances by all-time greats like Roy Ayers and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Everybody loves the sunshine 🌞. (III Points / Bayfront Jazz Festival)

🌅 Speaking of musical Miami gatherings, Rakastella announced yesterday afternoon that it’ll be returning to Virginia Key in December. The annual Art Basel event started in 2017 and has become a beloved gathering for dance floor fiends who enjoy beats of the psychedelic variety and prefer parties that go well into the morning. Writing from experience, it really doesn’t get much better than watching the sun pierce the horizon to the sound of Lindstrøm’s “I Feel Space” — tickets go on sale at the official website on Monday, May 10. (Rakastella via Instagram)

🗓 As of yesterday, advance appointments are no longer required at COVID-19 vaccination sites operated by Miami-Dade County. Times can still be scheduled at or by calling 305-614-2014, but it shouldn’t be an issue if you didn’t make one ahead of time. Folks, it’s never been easier to get the shot — what’re you waiting for? 👀 (Local 10)
