Plus, President Joe Biden is visiting as search-and-rescue efforts continue.

By Zach Schlein

It’s Wednesday.

Quite a few of you reached out after we invited folks in yesterday’s edition to share their stories of how the tragedy in Surfside has affected them or their loved ones. Thank you to everyone who got in touch; if you replied, please double-check your inbox for a follow-up email from The New Tropic about being featured in the newsletter. 🙏❤️🙏

One person we heard from was Lynne C., who wanted to highlight a community organization doing vital work:

“Neighbors 4 Neighbors is raising money for long-term recovery. This money will be used by Miami-Dade’s long-term recovery organization F.R.I.E.N.D. and the Town of Surfside to address needs that emerge and continue for those affected after the media attention and immediate responders have gone.”

Lynne spent nearly three decades as the executive director of Neighbors 4 Neighbors and is encouraging locals to assist her successor, Katy Meagher, with giving Miami-Dade a helping hand during this difficult time. She added, “Thank you for always supporting and working for our community. As the great Dr. Seuss wrote, ‘Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.’”

Anyone interested in assisting can visit the group’s Surfside Building Collapse Victim Fund, call 305-597-4404, as well as learn more at its official website and social media profiles.

➡️ As of writing, no additional victims have been found amid the rubble of Champlain Towers South. Because professional search-and-rescue teams have arrived from around the world to help, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava shared yesterday that volunteer rescuers are no longer needed at the site. The death toll currently stands at 11 people with 150 folks still unaccounted for. (Miami Herald)

🗣 President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will be visiting the site of the collapse tomorrow. According to Levine Cava, he will be spending time with impacted families as well as first responders. “The response and support we have received from federal, state and other partners over the last six days has been unprecedented,” the Miami-Dade mayor said in a statement. “This is the single largest non-hurricane emergency operation the state of Florida has ever seen.” (Local 10)

🕯 Family members of victims have received an outpouring of support from officials and the community at large. A beachside vigil was held with more than 200 people on Monday night, and families are receiving regular briefings at the site of the collapse. Meanwhile, the Support Surfside fund — one of the many charity drives taking place — has reportedly raised $1.6 million as of Monday. (Local 10 / Miami Herald)

🎆 Miami Beach has canceled several planned Fourth of July fireworks displays as a show of solidarity with victims and affected families of the collapse. Other Miami-Dade municipalities, including Surfside, Bal Harbour Village, and North Bay Village, have scrapped their respective Independence Day events for the same reasons. With that in mind — and for as raw and painful as this series of events remains — we don’t fault anyone for wanting to enjoy a sense of community and literal signs of light amid darkness; 2020 and 2021 have been tumultuous years, and it’s only natural to want to come together and cherish time-honored traditions. If you’re set on celebrating Independence Day with spectacle, Miami New Times has assembled a list of fireworks displays still happening around the 305. (Miami Herald / Miami New Times
