It’s F-r-i-d-a-y y’all.

Environment. That's the word that I misspelled in second grade, preventing me from making it to the third round of my elementary school spelling bee. Luckily, the kids participating in the national finals of the 93rd annual Scripps Spelling Bee happening in Orlando last night had way better luck than me. It's the first time the event has ever been held in Orlando and the winner, 14-year-old Zaila Avant-garde from New Orleans, was the first African-American to win.

But we’ve got more to cover today than just the spelling bee. Scroll on for the headlines and a weekend guide for our Pulptown+ members. Plus, because no one guessed yesterday’s trivia correctly, I’m sending you into the weekend with another try.

If the weekend doesn't look like this, I don't want it. 📸: @thejulianorlando. Thanks for the #️⃣, @pulseofcfl. You always pick fun city shots. | Wanna see your photo here? Tag either #pulptown or @pulptown on Instagram to be featured as our IG of the Day!

What Orlando is talking about

👙 You can now rent a pool for a day. The new app Swimply is to pools what Zipcar is to vehicles and Airbnb is to homes. Luckily for us, it’s making a splash right here in Central Florida. There are currently 140 area pools on the app up for rent, with prices varying from $15 to $100 an hour. (Orlando Sentinel)

🏞 Under I-park is moving along: AECOM Inc. was chosen as the firm to design the city of Orlando’s ambitious endeavor. The firm previously helped build the One World Trade Center in New York and the Orange County Convention Center. AECOM still needs to sign off on the contract, but if things go accordingly, construction on the park should start this year with completion set for 2024. (Bungalower

🎟 “The Hound of the Baskervilles” debuts at Mad Cow Theatre today. Three performers will play the part of 16 characters in the Sherlock Holmes classic taking place this weekend and next. Tickets start at $32 and shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays as well as 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. (If you go tonight, you’ll get some opening night champagne!) 🎟 Speaking of shows, local LatinX theater troupe Descolonizarte Teatro is putting on a performance tomorrow night at the Shakespeare Theater. Tickets for “Casos y Cachos Llaneros: Oral Stories from the Colombian and Venezuelan Plans” are $40, but there’s also a pay-what-you-can option. 🙏 The show is in Spanish though English subtitles will be provided. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. (Orlando Weekly)

❄️ In news you can file for a later date: Snowcat Ridge has announced a reopening date of Nov. 10. The seasonal snow park in Dade City, the first and only of its kind in the state, also said it’s adding two new attractions — an outdoor skating rink and igloos. (Orlando Weekly

🎃 Universal Orlando just added a fright-filled take on the Netflix series, “Haunting of Hill House” to its lineup of mazes at Halloween Horror Nights. The annual scare spectacular starts Sept. 3 and runs through Oct. 31, not including blackout dates. (Orlando Sentinel

📅 We planned the weekend…

…For our members.

It’s one of the many perks we offer when readers take the next step and become a Pulptown+ member.

Earlier this week, we played a round of trivia with them. Next week, they’ll play another round of I Spy for bragging rights and newsletter shoutouts.

Look, we know times are tough right now (If you ever want to talk about it, we can wine and Zoom 🍷, for real, for real). But if you’re down to support this dream of ours, we’d love to have you. It’s $8 a month (or $80 a year) to join as a Pulptown+ member, and in addition to the perks above, you’ll also get our sincerest gratitude.
