🏀History was made at Monday night's Magic game
Plus, here's where first responders can score a free breakfast.
It’s Wednesday folks, and today we’re jumping right into things with news about how history was made at Monday night’s Magic game, a sad day in UCF Football history, and potentially good news for a former Magic All-Star. Who knew we were such sports fans?
There’s also news below about perks for first responders and a moving story about an Osceola couple who’ve fostered 300 kids over the years and their struggle with COVID-19.
Let’s keep it moving, shall we?

What Orlando is talking about
There’s always a lot happening in COVID-related news, especially in Florida. Today, we’re doing our best to sum it all up for you: The coronavirus testing site at Barnett Park will remain open until at least Feb. 28; Orlando’s getting a new free mobile COVID-19 testing site that will specifically target the local Latino community; Darden Restaurants said yesterday that it would give its hourly workers paid time off to get a COVID-19 vaccine once they become eligible to receive it; Florida, already leading the country in documented cases of the more contagious UK strain of COVID-19, has doubled the reported number of cases since last week.
In heavier news…
🏈 Yesterday was a sad day in UCF Football history: Gene McDowell, the Knight’s all-time winningest coach, passed away. According to this Orlando Sentinel article, McDowell had been battling leukemia for almost 19 years and recently overcame numerous complications from COVID-19. His story is a fascinating one worth reading — the tidbit that he accepted the head coach position and agreed to a $1 a year salary for his first year in order to keep the football program afloat was especially moving. (Orlando Sentinel)
🙏 Sue Braley and her husband Dennis spent much of their lives fostering more than 300 kids; sadly, Sue died of COVID-19 a week ago today. Dennis was admitted to the hospital for the virus on the same day and currently remains there. The Braleys spent most of their lives in Central Florida and had moved from Polk County to Osceola just recently. This is your gentle reminder to mask up, social distance, and stay home — these precautions aren’t just for you, but for your neighbors too. (Orlando Sentinel)
🗣 Wanna know where Florida’s top lawmakers stand on impeaching former President Donald Trump for the second time? Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott were two of 45 Republicans who voted against moving forward with the impeachment trial. Trump is facing impeachment for inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. (Miami Herald)
In lighter news…
🏀 Did you know? History was made at Monday night’s Orlando Magic game when two female referees officiated the same NBA game for the first time ever. (Fox35)
☕ First responders can get a free bagel and a coffee courtesy of Bagel King this week. Bagel King has three shops in Central Florida: Lake Mary, Casselberry, and Winter Park. (Orlando Weekly)
🏘 Former Orlando Magic player Shaquille O’Neal may have officially offloaded his Isleworth mansion after it lingered for three years on the market. Apparently, there’s a sale pending for the 31,000-square-foot, 17-car garage, 12-bedroom, 11-bath home, and it’s priced way higher than the $3.9 million Shaq originally spent on it. However, its current number is below the $28 million he initially asked for in 2018. (Orlando Sentinel)
