4 things Seattle is talking about

💉Vaccinations gone mobile. In an effort to speed up getting the city’s young adults vaccinated against COVID-19, the Seattle Fire Department will deploy mobile vaccination teams. They’ll be stopping by neighborhood breweries, outdoor dining areas, parks, and beaches. Today they’ll be in the U District and two of our favorite neighborhood businesses — Big Time Brewery & Alehouse and Sweet Alchemy Ice Creamery — are offering discounts to those getting vaccinated. 🚔Eight months later...and the concrete wall around SPD’s East Precinct has officially come down. It went up last summer after continued vandalism of the building. The wall drew complaints from people regarding the blocked sidewalks and safety concerns for bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians. There is now a “tall security fence” that has replaced the concrete sections. (The Seattle Times)

🐶The cost of pet ownership. While many people welcomed a new furry friend into their lives during the pandemic, many who were struggling financially were being forced to make difficult decisions. According to Crosscut, of the 4.6% of Seattleites who remain unemployed, about 63% are pet owners. Choosing between finances and a pet is a decision that’s not easy and why the Seattle Humane Society works with nonprofits and other organizations to provide financial assistance. (Crosscut)

🎨Seattle arts culture, unite! The Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Henry Art Gallery, On the Board, Northwest Film Forum, Frye Art Museum, and Velocity Dance Center are teaming up for a citywide arts collaboration — Murmurations. The endeavor will run throughout the summer into the fall and will include events put on by the organizations working in collaboration with each other. (The Stranger)

Have a drink with Rick McLaughlin from Big Time Brewery

In our first "Have a drink with" series for the month of May we sat down with Rick McLaughlin who owns and manages Big Time Brewery & Alehouse. Big Time is a neighborhood favorite and we’re not just saying that — a bunch of you have called out the business in our survey of what you love about the U District. Open since 1988, the brewery is as they claim “Seattle’s original brewpub.” If you were a student at the UW, you’ve likely stopped in the brewery for a pint or bite to eat.

Catch our conversation on Instagram with Rick here and keep reading for a quick Q&A with him. And don’t forget to keep supporting local businesses like Big Time!
