Dear Friends,

It is with immense gratitude, deep appreciation, and an enthusiastic outlook towards the future that we invite you to celebrate several firsts with Ten Strands, beginning with our inaugural annual report

With an entrepreneurial eye and “can do” attitude, we leverage our partnerships to ensure that every day we get closer to realizing our mission of bringing environmental literacy to the 6.2 million K12 students in California.  Whether working with state agencies, curriculum experts, district administrators, or classroom teachers, we appreciate our partners and the value they add to our collective work.

Ten Strands is an attentive steward of the gifts and grants we receive and the programs we manage and support. Our role is unique because it requires us to maintain a broader, longer-term vision while providing on-the-ground, day-to-day support for educators—all while raising funds for strategic initiatives that move us closer to our goals.

For example, we were instrumental in developing A Blueprint for Environmental Literacy, released in September 2015. The Blueprint is a first for the state in outlining how environmental literacy can be integrated into California’s education policy at the highest levels.

Also in 2015, the San Mateo Environmental Learning Collaborative was a first in bringing together a county office of education with local environmental education providers to give teachers professional learning and resources, while incorporating best practices of the Next Generation Science Standards and California’s adopted Environmental Principles and Concepts.

Having cultivated an extensive range of skills and resources for this important role, and thanks to support from our funders, Ten Strands has emerged as a leader of the environmental literacy movement in California. The data we utilize to inform our decisions and the perspective we gain from our partnerships strengthens our credibility, effectiveness, and influence.

You, our funders and partners, are the key to our success. Thanks to you, Ten Strands surpassed $1 million in revenue in 2015 for the first time in our three-year history. We thank you for your continued support, trust, and confidence in our work and hope to celebrate many firsts with you for years to come!

All the best,

Will Parish
