The project

Launched in May 2015 and funded by the European Commission programme Horizon 2020, the ORC-PLUS project aims at developping an innovative Thermal Energy Storage optimised for a small Concentrated Solar Power plant (1-5 MWe) located in a desert area and necessary to improve the dispatchability (production on demand) and number of hours of production of the plant coupled with an ORC system.

The Objectives

ORC-PLUS aims to increase the technological and economical performance of renewable energy systems. The final result will be an industrial pilot plant used to demonstrate the feasibility of the technology in a real operational environment.

The workplan

The project is organized around 9 work packages comprising management, dissemination, business, research and demonstration activities. The project duration will reach 4 years for an amount of nearly 7 millions euros.

What is CSP?
Concentrated Solar Power plants use mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto receivers where it is converted into heat. A heat transfer fluid transports the thermal energy to a storage system or a power block where it is used to produce steam that drives a steam turbine to generate electricity. The integration of a storage system enables power production during cloudy periods and after sunset.
This ORC-PLUS project has received funding from the EU Horizon 2020 Framework  Programme for Research and Innovation under grant agreement no 657690.
