Expect the unexpected in 4th quarter

by Steve Jones, Owner and President

I think we are all tired of hearing how "unprecedented" everything is with how COVID-19 has changed how our economy and society functions, but it's still true. And I think that's really going to show as we go into the final quarter of 2020.

Anyone in our industry knows what the fourth quarter means: holiday shipping season. Traditionally, we've seen the sharp uptick on deliveries start around November 15 but last year, it started a couple of weeks early. This year, we believe it will start even earlier as more people are trying to order early to avoid the inevitable delays that happen around the holidays due to weather and the sheer volume of packages moving through the supply chain.

Encourage your customers and loved ones to consider Christmas shopping early as many will be doing so online. They must allow for the item to arrive to them then to be shipped to wherever they are sending it if they are not traveling to see family this year. Flexibility, agility, and communication will be key for everyone along the supply chain as we enter this season.

Safety Bulletin:
Are you always inspection ready?

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck may have already happened, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t consider the safety checks all year long.
This year’s theme was driver requirements for roadside inspections. Last year, more than 3.3 million driver inspections took place nationwide, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Of those inspections, 28 percent resulted in a driver violation, and six percent placed a driver out-of-service.
Prepare for roadside with these five must-haves:

Buckle that seat belt. Failure to use a seat belt is the No. 1 driver-related violation. Also, make sure your truck’s seat belts are in good working order.

Keep Record of Duty Status (RODS) current. Top RODS violations to avoid include false reports, failure to have an electronic logging device (ELD) with instruction sheets when required, and failure to maintain blank RODS graph grids.

Stay drug-free. Inspectors will check for drugs, alcohol, weapons or other contraband. Remember, marijuana is still banned by federal law and therefore prohibited for truck drivers by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Stay well-rested. Inspectors will check for illness, fatigue or any other sign of impairment.

Keep your documents up to date, including:
  • Driver’s license or CDL
  • Medical examiner’s certificate
  • Carrier ID and status (USDOT/NCS number or jurisdictional equivalent)
  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • Shipping papers/bills of lading If applicable
  • Driver’s daily vehicle inspection report
  • Fuel tax permits
  • Annual periodic inspection sticker location
  • Special permits
  • Certificate for Mexico-domiciled motor carriers

Team Member Spotlight: Anne Williams

When we first starting blogging at On Time Logistics, we knew we wanted to feature our team members. One of our very first team member spotlights was Anne Williams, who has been a faithful employee for more than a decade.

A long time has passed since that feature and many things have changed like Anne moving to another state and working for us remotely, and other things have not changed such as she is a valuable employee who we could not do without.

We decided to check in with Anne again to share about her again on our blog

We update our blog several times a month. It includes company news, team member highlights, industry insights, and more. Read more on our website
