General Secretary’s message

Festive greeting
Another year is nearly finished and 2016 approaches, so to be sure to put in your diaries the dates for the Annual congress in Maastricht Sept 7-10th. This year has been another busy year for ESRA. The annual meeting in Ljubljana was again a great success and a very informative meeting for those who attended. Slovenia turned out to be hidden treasure in Europe, with Ljubljana itself a delightful city, full of interest and so welcoming. The scientific program was well received and as always all the workshops were fully booked. We must thank the local organising committee and Kenes for ensuring an efficient well managed congress. The ESRA family continues to expand with The Baltic States, Slovenia and Croatia being the latest countries to be represented within ESRA. This year has also seen an expansion in the workshops offered to members, with a highly successful cadaver workshop held in Paris in November.
The ESRA diploma continues to be increasingly popular with a further examination held in Singapore in November and with potential future destinations in India and the Middle East. In addition to the Diploma, ESRA has also linked with the University of East Anglia (UK) to popularize their distance learning MSc in regional anesthesia. ESRA has secured a 10% reduction in fees and will be announcing the addition of ESRA educational bursaries for the MSc.

One of the most rewarding developments of 2015 is the integration of ‘PROSPECT’ into ESRA, a new website has been constructed and the latest pain guidelines for LSCS have recently been published, please take time to visit ESRA website.

2015 has been an exciting year for ESRA and we look forward to your support for the coming year and I hope you all have a lovely festive season.
Barry Nicholls
General Secretary

Our new address for both ESRA and EDRA is:
Avenue Florimont 4

Telephone and fax numbers remain the same.
Please note that the ESRA office is closed until 4 January 2016.
Trainee representative in the ESRA Council
During the General Assembly in September 2015, the ESRA by-laws were corrected so that the ESRA Council can officially include a trainee representative with voting rights into its structure.

The aim of this is to reflect the needs and the wishes of the younger members, the trainees as they represent the future of our Society. ESRA encourages each zone in its own by-laws and Society to include a trainee representative. The trainee representative in the Council will be elected by the trainees’ members of ESRA and that each trainee will be able to nominate himself for the position. The candidates will be encouraged to give a personal statement one month before the election in September 2016, the applications for resident members will open 3 months before and the voting will be done electronically. The trainees representative will be appointed for a position of 3 years.

The duties of the trainees representative will be to work with the ESRA Board to reflect the trainees’ needs and opinions, to assist in building a resident section within ESRA and to improve the communication with residents members either through the website, newsletter or Social Media.
More information will be communicated in Spring 2016.
New ESRA educational bursaries

This year, ESRA has developed a partnership with the University of East Anglia (UEA) for Specialist Clinical Masterships MSc in Regional Anaesthesia with a 10% Discount for ESRA Members!

Regional Anaesthesia has long been the most popular specialization for trainee anaesthetists and now ESRA and SCM are bringing you the first higher degree qualification in Regional Anaesthesia (RA) in the UK.

The MSc offers a tangible qualification that is ideally suited to practicing anaesthesia trainees and experienced practitioners wishing to progress in or understand the deeper principals of RA. The highly flexible (blended e-learning course) can be undertaken while in full time practice or whilst undertaking a fellowship.

In addition to a guaranteed 10% discount for all ESRA members, ESRA are looking into supporting ESRA member students with additional educational bursaries, ensuring that those students willing to apply themselves have an equal opportunity to substantially discount the cost of their three year course. The top five performing ESRA members will receive a bursary of €1200 towards the educational fees. Criteria and application forms will be on the website after new year. These bursaries will be available to all ESRA members starting the MSc in 2016.

For more information:
Applications deadline is 11 January 2016 for 2016 intake.

European Diploma of Pain Medicine
In 2016, ESRA is launching its own Diploma Examination of Pain Medicine.

The purpose of the European Diploma of Pain Medicine (EDPM) is to harmonize and improve quality standards for safe and independent practice of interventional pain medicine in Europe and abroad. The diploma programme assesses the minimal competencies necessary to practice at the level of an interventional pain medicine specialist. The diploma programme is intended to be complementary to national standards and enhance the competent, ethical, and professional care of interventional pain medicine.

The first EDPM Examination is planned to take place at the 35th ESRA congress in Maastricht, the Netherlands. More information about the congress on
More information about the EDPM will be published at the beginning of next year – registrations will open in Spring 2016.
