Promoting VidaSana

The dedicated women of GVS volunteered their time and took to the streets on July 15th to engage the community and spread awareness about the VidaSana program. Community outreach is a crucial part of improving a community’s health, step-by-step.

Taking Control

To promote a healthy community, GVS recently offered a diabetes self-management education program. Members met weekly over two months and developed tools and strategies to better manage their diabetic conditions. In addition to learning how to better cope with symptoms like tiredness, pain, and varying blood sugar levels, members also learned new behaviors to create healthier lifestyles. Due to the success of this novel program, we will continue to offer this diabetes education series to more members in the coming months.

1,000 VidaSana Members!!

At the end of June, we were excited to enroll our 1,000th VidaSana member! Galinda, whose daughter is also a GVS member, has taken the initial steps toward improving her health. Like all other organizations within the Grameen family, VidaSana relies on word-of-mouth to promote our program, so the fact that a family member was our “Mil Vida Sana” is truly emblematic of the Grameen spirit. We are proud to welcome Galinda into the VidaSana community!

A Proud Member of the Queens Community

We recently participated in the Elmhurst Community Partnership’s Immigration & Wellness Resource Fair. Held in Jackson Heights, several VidaSana members debuted their newly acquired Zumba teaching skills and instructed classes for the wider Queens community! Based on rave reviews from participants, our VidaSana members were invited to conduct more classes at other neighborhood events. We are so excited that VidaSana continues to maintain a strong presence in the community we serve.

Healthy Cooking Goes Live

Education about healthy eating is an integral part of the VidaSana program. Weekly cooking demonstrations are conducted by members themselves in order to better educate others in the GVS community. Realizing that our members have busy schedules, we utilize “Facebook Live” to stream the demonstrations in order to reach women who are not able to join us in person. Videos are kept as a resource on the GVS Facebook Page. We invite you to join us every Monday to receive healthy eating tips and to get some delicious new recipes!

All in the Family

VidaSana is committed to serving our members and their families. We recently conducted our first family activity workshop, including jewelry projects, a paper fan arts and crafts activity, and a screening of the movie “Inside Out.” Our activity space was transformed into a movie theater, complete with a popcorn machine, healthy snacks, and fruit-infused water! There was a great turnout of both moms and their kids, and it was a fun family event for all!
