Cancer Screenings for Our Members

Keeping our members healthy is our top priority. We are pleased that VidaSana has surpassed all of the Healthy People 2020 screening goals for pap smears, mammograms and colorectal cancer screenings. Many of our members have not had appropriate screenings in the past, so providing these critical tests and delivering education about the importance of preventive care is helping them lead healthier lives for years to come.

Cornell Nutrition Class at GVS

Later this month some of our members will finish an 8-week course on nutrition and health. Sponsored by Cornell University: Cooperative Extension New York City, this unique certificate program is teaching women the importance of making healthier nutrition choices and becoming more physically active. This successful program will be followed-up in July with a second 8-week series focusing on eating healthfully with the whole family. The children of participating members will be invited to join their mothers as a fun and educational summer activity.

Border Celebration

GVS recently hosted a moving and inspirational event to help lessen the stigma that is often associated with the border-crossing process that people face when coming to the United States. The celebratory event was designed so women could view their journeys not with shame, but as an experience of survival, courage, opportunity, and rebirth. The women listened to audio recordings of other members narrating their journeys and read quotes gathered through various interviews in order for people to become motivated to share their own stories.

Our 500th Member Joins VidaSana!

We were excited to enroll our 500th member in April, completing our "Project 500" membership goal! Maria Moreno sells cosmetics and is a participant in the Grameen America microfinance program. Maria believes joining VidaSana was the right decision in making her own health a priority. Next up - “Mil Vidas Sanas!” or 1,000 Healthy Lives!

Mother's Day at GVS - Día de la Madre

The women of VidaSana recently enjoyed a special Mother’s Day celebration. Spearheaded by the "Volunteers of VidaSana," the community-building event involved several pampering and relaxation activities. The members provided all of the supplies for the day, including beauty products, food and refreshments. The celebration was the kick-off event for a variety of member-sponsored events we have begun offering in May.
