I grew up in Omaha, NE, a predominately white city and state. When I was younger and even throughout college into adulthood, I never thought much about race. Everyone was cool with everyone and it stayed like that until I moved to New York City in 2013. There, I met a number of black co-workers who had the opposite experiences of me. I really didn’t know how to handle their charges of institutional racism and injustice. It rubbed me the wrong way because I didn’t understand their side. It led to lots of frustrating work relationships.
Over the past 6 years since I moved, I have learned a lot about another person/group of peoples perspective. From my girlfriend not feeling safe around men because of how our society has always elevated men’s being over a women’s existence, to my LGBTQ+ friends also not feeling safe to be who they are in fear of public ridicule or physical violence.
It is from these experiences I felt the need to create a keynote/workshop to help young people learn the skill of empathy through inclusion. I want to teach our young people what empathy sounds, looks and feels like so we can all love each other. Below is a video clip from one of my recent empathy talks.
