From

The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo have donated millions of dollars to organizations that promote health. Sugary sodas are considered to be among the main factors behind the obesity epidemic and tooth decay, raising questions about whether health and medical organizations should accept manufacturers' donations.

The great thinkers of the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment were scientists. Not only did many of them contribute to mathematics, physics, and physiology, but all of them were avid theorists in the sciences of human nature. They were cognitive neuroscientists, who tried to explain thought and emotion in terms of physical mechanisms of the nervous system. They were evolutionary psychologists, who speculated on life in a state of nature and on animal instincts that are “infused into our bosoms.” And they were social psychologists, who wrote of the moral sentiments that draw us together, the selfish passions that inflame us, and the foibles of shortsightedness that frustrate our best-laid plans.

Have you ever made a resolution to acquire a healthier lifestyle by changing your behaviour? Whether you wanted to be less stressed, cut out junk food, or stop smoking, you probably defined some simple rules and rewards to influence your behaviour and hopefully achieve that goal. When you applied those rules, you were in fact practicing “gamification”, the process of applying game mechanics to a real-life situation in order to generate a desired outcome. Unfortunately, you didn’t have the resources to turn those ideas into an exciting app.

A recent CDC survey showed that workplace efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease may get the most bang for their buck in the social services and transportation fields.
Using data from the 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the investigators analyzed responses from nearly 67 000 participants in 21 states who answered questions about their occupation and 7 “ideal” cardiovascular health habits established by the American Heart Association. Specifically, the investigators asked whether participants smoked; were physically active; had healthy blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels; were overweight or obese; and ate a healthful diet.

The Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT) is a software application for use on desktop or laptop computers and mobile devices (minimum screen size of 7.9 inches recommended). It was developed to facilitate the assessment of within-country health inequalities. HEAT is organized around two main components:Explore inequality, which enables users to explore the situation in one country of interest to determine the latest situation of inequality and the change in inequalities over time.Compare inequality, which enables users to benchmark, i.e. compare the situation in one country of interest with the situation in other countries.Inequalities can be assessed using disaggregated data and summary measures that are visualized in a variety of interactive ways, including tables and graphs. Customized results can be exported and saved in different formats.
Effective Messages in Vaccine Promotion: A Randomized Trial

CONCLUSIONS: Current public health communications about vaccines may not be effective. For some parents, they may actually increase misperceptions or reduce vaccination intention. Attempts to increase concerns about communicable diseases or correct false claims about vaccines may be especially likely to be counterproductive. More study of pro-vaccine messaging is needed.

A new UCSF study finds that some of the most popular apps for diabetes, depression and caregivers are too difficult to use, especially by underserved populations.
The study, published this week in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, finds that the apps aren’t easy to use, especially by low-income and underserved users who should be their target audience. And if they’re too difficult, the user will get frustrated and ditch them.
From

The recent revelation that the sugar industry attempted to manipulate science in the 1960s1 has once again focused attention on the quality of the scientific evidence in the field of nutrition and how best to prevent diet-related chronic disease.Beginning in the 1970s, the US government and major professional nutrition organizations recommended that individuals in the United States eat a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet, launching arguably the largest public health experiment in history.
When science- and evidence-based guidelines conflict with patient wishes: What’s a doc to do? « Science-Based Medicine

There’s a misconception that I frequently hear about evidence-based medicine (EBM), which can equally apply to science-based medicine (SBM). Actually, there are several, but they are related. These misconceptions include the idea that EBM/SBM guidelines are a straightjacket, that they are “cookbook medicine,” and that EBM/SBM should be the be-all and end-all of how to practice clinical medicine. New readers might not be familiar with the difference between EBM and SBM, and here is not the place to explain the difference in detail because this post isn’t primarily about that difference.
Health literacy: Why patient information leaflets need improvement

Health literacy must be considered during patient information leaflet development, as it can make a difference and improve patient lives. Let’s begin with a question. When it comes to assembling flat-pack furniture, are you an ‘instruction follower’, or do you prefer to work it out for yourself? If you’re the latter, it’s most probably because you find instructions impossible to understand. What’s the worst that can happen if you get it wrong, anyway? You either have to start again, or make do with a less-than-perfect chest of draws.
