The Warewithal

Spring is here and we have experienced one of our busiest periods.   Developers appear to be looking at including more high rise units, which require deeper boreholes. Therefore cable percussive drilling contractors are in high demand, resulting in a longer mobilisation of up to three weeks....something that needs to be factored into the programme by our clients.

Looking further ahead, we have the potential of getting more involved in the assessments of Oil Spills in the Niger Delta. We are also assisting Regenesis with a webinar on 14th June on the importance of a co-ordinated approach between the consultant and contractor on remedial actions (details to follow shortly).

Lets hope that the forthcoming election will result in a blooming fantastic summer!

Initial Site Walkovers (and being flexible)
This spring we were asked to conduct a ground investigation on a site in Wembley, London. The project scope included some deeper Cable Percussive Boreholes and a number of internal window sample locations. Unfortunately this was not your typical derelict Brownfield site ripe for redevelopment!

The site comprises a number of industrial units occupied by multiple tenants (from Car Repairs to a Marble Cutters). Added to this were the informal hours the units were open and the rapidly changing access restrictions posed by cars appearing overnight.
During an initial site visit, we were able to meet the existing tenants and discuss possible borehole locations.  However, as with all good plans, there are always adjustments needed.  On arrival on the first day a number of extra vehicles had appeared which prevented positioning of the Cable Percussive Rig at the first location. We also had to adjust the techniques on another location and used a much more compact mechanical window sampling rig to collect the required data.

This investigation is a helpful reminder of the value of an initial site walkover prior to conducting an intrusive investigation and on being flexible.
Case Study

Back to health

WDE was recently involved in the remediation of a former industrial site due for residential redevelopment which had suffered significant hydrocarbon contamination to the subsurface. As the groundwater was very sensitive (being in a SPZ 1), special attention was needed to reduce the soil and groundwater concentrations.  A combination of techniques was adopted, comprising source excavation and enhanced groundwater treatment. Impacted soils were placed in windows, which required the addition of fertiliser to encourage aerobic degradation. Lime was also added prior to the materials being reused on site due to high precipitation at the time of backfilling.

The groundwater treatment comprised pump and treat followed by the addition of ORC. Through a groundwater testing regime, we were able to show that our efforts had been successful. Now time to treat ourselves to a cuppa!

Staff News
We are happy to welcome Mike Emery and Rowena Cameron into the WDE team. Both are gaining the necessary experience to become Geo-Environmental Consultants by attending both internal and external training courses as well as learning on the job.  We are also currently recruiting and hope to announce another new staff member in the next newsletter.

We are also pleased to announce that David Hastings and Jason Fitzgerald have both been promoted to Senior Consultant and Tom Clarke has been promoted to Consultant.

We have successfully completed our annual 9001 and 18001 audits with no major non conformities recorded...phew!
