February 2021

I am truly honored to serve as your 5th District School Board Representative! I am eager to continue the work of advocating for and supporting policies that benefit the children and families of our district and the city at-large. I plan to continue my focus on the priorities I ran on: equity, community empowerment, and teacher autonomy. We need to work to set policies that allow for effective governance while protecting teacher autonomy and inclusion in the governing process and incorporating the voices of families, students, and our entire community. I will work to be sure I’m always listening to as many people as I can while carrying on the work you’ve elected me to the school board to do.

We need to recognize and commend the work of RPS administration, staff, teachers, and students in successfully executing a virtual learning plan. It hasn’t been easy, but we have faced and overcome many challenges together. However, there is so much work left to do to fully achieve the goal of providing each and every child with access to the top quality educational experience they deserve regardless of address or zip code.

I look forward to benefiting from the great diversity in our district by developing relationships with neighbors from all backgrounds and walks of life. While I am but one person, I hope to bring together a constantly growing base of people who can inform and improve the way we govern RPS.

To that end, I will be publishing a monthly newsletter and hosting weekly meet and greets (virtually at first), as a way of communicating with you. Look for updates on both my website and official Facebook page. I truly look forward to hearing from you. Great things are ahead.  Remember: “Together Our Children Thrive.”

Sincerely,

Stephanie Rizzi

5th District Connection:

My position as a Math Interventionist at Swansboro Elementary School connects me to the 5th District. This is my fourth year at Swansboro ES. Under the leadership of Dr. Wayne Scott, I have been afforded the opportunity to grow and excel beyond measure. I taught at John B. Cary under Retiree Principal Brenda Phillips, also. I have 30 years of teaching experience in Richmond City Public Schools.

Things I love about the 5th District and RPS:

I love the 5th District and RPS because they care about the people. Their unyielding support for students, parents and teachers ensure higher levels of learning for all students. They collaborate and reflect to implement change for the benefit of the community.

My vision and hopes for RPS:

My vision for the 5th District and RPS is to become proactive in moving toward what they need and want for the success of all students without compromising their collective commitments. My hopes for the 5th District and RPS would be for them to demonstrate effective leadership and serve as a model for other school systems.
