August 2021

Greetings 5th District neighbors,

There is much happening now in Richmond Public Schools. Our schools are working hard prepare for reopening on September 8th.  We are so excited to welcome your children back to in-person or virtual learning. Please take the time to look at our Reopening page. There you will find the answer to many questions regarding RPS reopening. We are keeping a close eye on COVID developments and are working to be sure our families are safe.
We have also been busy working on policy that will make our schools better. Notably, we recently adopted a new science curriculum, approved a $65 million literacy plan to focus on increasing literacy district-wide, and voted to have schools manage school construction, including the building of a brand new George Wythe High School. We will be soliciting participation in an advisory group specifically designed to discuss what the community would like to see in the new school very soon. I will be providing regular updates on my Facebook page and updates will be available on the Richmond Public Schools website.
As always, I encourage you to watch our school board meetings via the RPS Facebook page, check Board Docs to keep informed of agenda items and for board information and to reach out to me at any time. Also, remember that I have virtual office hours every month, and I’d love to meet and talk with you.  It is my hope to have in-person meetings very soon. I really miss in-person engagement with my community members.

Vaccination is the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic, and all RPS staff are required to provide proof of vaccination by October 1st. On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, all employees will receive an email from TalentEd Records with instructions on how to submit documentation of vaccination status electronically.

-   Please visit if you need a copy of your vaccination record or make an appointment to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

-   Medical and religious exemptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis. To inquire about these exemptions, employees should email the Talent Office at; anyone granted an exemption will need to provide proof of a negative COVID test on a weekly basis.

-   The vaccine mandate will also apply to contractors, partners, and volunteers. They will receive additional information about this directly from the Talent Office.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Talent Office at

What do you love about the 5th District and RPS?

What I really like about the 5th District is it's community diversity and the sense of community it's residents display.

What I like about RPS is that it gives me the privilege and honor to interact and educate a wonderful diverse group of students. It allows me to work alongside some very passionate, creative and brilliant educators.
What are your visions and hopes for RPS?  How might they be achieved?

My visions and hopes for RPS is for the district to take the right steps to move forward into the 21st century. By obtaining and providing access to resources that will prepare RPS students to be competitive with other districts and be successful in the future. One way I feel to achieve this is to continue to be an advocate for student needs. Socially and Educationally.  A lot of times decisions are being made for students by persons who haven't taught in a classroom in 10+ yrs.  Often times policies, rules and norms are outdated and don't reflect the changes that have taken place in society or the advancements in technology.
