October 2021

Happy Fall Everyone!

As usual it has been a busy month for RPS. We're well on our way to passing a Collective Bargaining agreement that will give RPS workers more of a voice in how to best serve the needs of our children. We are also working on policy that will make Open Enrollment and Specialty School Applications more transparent and equitable, and at this point, all schools should have hot meal options.  There is still much to do, so please stay updated by checking BoardDocs regularly, attending and tuning into meetings, and of course reaching out to me.  It is my sincere wish that we all have a restful week during our Wellness Days (11/1 through 11/5) and return ready to finish out the first half of the school year RPS strong.

Mr. Kevin Johnson

Labor Trade Crew Chief—George Wythe High School

How long have you worked at George Wythe?

I’ve been at George Wythe for 26 years. I have worked for RPS for 32 years. I started at Wythe and
after 5 years was offered a supervisory position at Oak Grove Elementary where I won Support
Employee of the Year. That was a big deal because at the time, the person selected for this award was
up against all RPS support staff regardless of position. When the head custodian at Wythe moved to the
Tech Center, I was asked to return to Wythe, and I’ve been here ever since—21 years.

What do you like most about your job?

The challenge. This position forces you to use your brain and be innovative. You always have to be
ready to adapt to change. I also enjoy communicating with teachers, administration, and our staff. Our
goals need to be aligned to achieve the ultimate goal with is the education of our children. We have
great communication here. I really appreciate that the leadership trusts me to do my job. It’s one less
thing they have to worry about. We all work well together.

Why RPS?

I’ve had success here. I haven’t seen a reason to leave. I’ve found my niche so to say. I am going to stick
with this. I am also a proud product of RPS.

What are your hopes and dreams for RPS?

It would be really nice to have a new school, but I’m afraid that won’t change some of the underlying
issues. I dream of having more parental participation. I used to see parents engage a lot more than
now. It seems that over the years parental participation has dwindled. I didn’t have nearly as much as
these children have now. I mean we had nothing. I think, overall, I’ve done alright for myself. We had
very little, so I know it can be done.
Vaccination is the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic, and all RPS staff are required to provide proof of vaccination by October 1st. On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, all employees will receive an email from TalentEd Records with instructions on how to submit documentation of vaccination status electronically.

-   Please visit if you need a copy of your vaccination record or make an appointment to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

-   Medical and religious exemptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis. To inquire about these exemptions, employees should email the Talent Office at; anyone granted an exemption will need to provide proof of a negative COVID test on a weekly basis.

-   The vaccine mandate will also apply to contractors, partners, and volunteers. They will receive additional information about this directly from the Talent Office.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Talent Office at
