Introducing our inaugural Massachusetts Poet in the Spotlight: Kate Hanson Foster

Highlighted by Loom Press

Kate Hanson Foster's first book of poems, Mid Drift, was published by Loom Press, and was selected by Massachusetts Center for the Book as a "Must Read" in 2011. She gained her MFA from Bennington College, and her poetry has appeared in California Quarterly, Comstock Review, Harpur Palate, Poet Lore and elsewhere. She lives with her husband, Bert and her two children, Henry and Coralie in Groton, Massachusetts.
Poetic Profession "Like a responsible writer, I budget a certain amount of time each week where I write at my local library. This is necessary because I have small children, and it is nearly impossible to find a quiet moment at home. However, my ideal location to write would be in my bed, under the covers, drinking coffee with a side of whiskey." -Kate
Godless
It is not a word
that brings me to a perfect halt.

It is a hard, unbreakable consonant
that hurts in my mouth like an olive pit.

Something clean, something
finished in my inner ear.

And outside:
All lung and no breath. It is easy

to remember this kind of stillness.
I want it on my skin

like a tick. I want to lie down
like a dog for what it might give me.

In the compost across the yard,
bugs suck at my scraps.

Fire soot—Coffee grind—
Apple core—and I think:

Save nothing. And I am in love.
I am in love with this quiet church.
Since 1978, Loom Press has published books with a special emphasis on writers and subjects from the Merrimack River watershed in central New England. Check out their website for more information.
Massachusetts Poet in the Spotlight is a new monthly installment from Mass Poetry. Each month we will be shining the spotlight on a poet affiliated with, and nominated by, one of our poetry partners. If you are a partner with a poet to nominate, email laurin@masspoetry.org.
