Meet Our June Massachusetts Poet in the Spotlight: Owen Carpenter

Highlighted by The Marble Collection

Owen Carpenter is a senior at Ayer Shirley Regional High School Owen participated in TMC’s Writing for Publication Workshop, in which he was paired one-to-one with a college student mentor who helped him refine his voice and guide his work to publication for real-world audiences. Along with poetry, music has become important to Owen and he wishes to combine his two loves. He has begun to write poems based on his emotions and then add chord progressions written on his guitar. With time, he hopes to connect the characteristics of everyday life, poetry, and music more effectively.
Poetic Profession
"Marry me girl, be my fairy to the world, be my very own constellation"

"A scarlet starlet and she's in my bed, a candidate for my soul mate bled, Push the trigger and pull the thread"

"Centuries are what it meant to me, A cemetery where I marry the sea, Stranger things could never change my mind"
A Funeral for the Flowers

A flower will wilt,
Just like any day,
Or any pain.

The silence of a flower
Is matched only
By the curtains of another day.

The pedicel will falter,
Just like you will falter…
Just like we will falter.

Upon Pistil...
Upon Pistil...

The darkness
Is overthrown
By the ovary of time.

Abloom with the life of another moment,
Our repose comes to an end.
Our expiration,

The filament of life
Is the fact,
That we all wake up from sleep.

And once again,
We depart from the departed,
In a beautiful reawakening.

Like the solitary flower,
On the return,
Of the day so warm.

The Marble Collection [TMC], a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit organization, publishes the only
Massachusetts statewide print and online magazine of the arts featuring jury-selected
artwork, writing, poetry, photography, and music by students in grades 8 to 12. TMC also
offers e-Mentoring workshops in which teen writers and artists are partnered with college
student mentors who help them refine their voices and guide their work to publication. At a
time when budget cuts and an emphasis on standardized testing mean that fewer teens in
Massachusetts have access to the arts, TMC collaborates with 200 Massachusetts schools
and community groups to publish and mentor 100 teen writers and artists each school year.
