DAEC Resumes Classes at the La Plata County Jail
DAEC has returned to serving students at the La Plata County Jail! We previously worked with the inmates at our local jail for about 15 years and then took a brief hiatus. Now we have a contract for 3 years and are already serving ten students, both men and women. In the short amount of time at the jail, we have already had one student at the jail re-enroll with us upon release. We hope that as more ex-offenders are released, they will continue their studies with us at our Durango site.

Indeed, many students who transition from the jail to the Hilltop House Community Corrections facility eventually earn their high school equivalency credential through our Center, as three men did in 2016 alone. Helping adult learners at the jail is an especially important program as it helps both the student to integrate more smoothly and successfully into our local community and reduces recidivism substantially. Virtually every study on the impact of education on recidivism finds a positive correlation between the two. In particular, a 2013 RAND Corporation study found upwards of a 40% association with recidivism when an academic program was paired with vocational training, and career advising and job placement are key elements that our BOOST program provides once a student enrolls at our Durango site upon release.

Cooking and Money Matters Class

The Center is pleased to offer “Cooking and Money Matters” class—a joint effort launched by Cooking Matters, Durango Adult Education Center and First Southwest Bank next month. The class not only combines two separate established classes into one, but also champions the DAEC’s commitment to help individuals achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency.

“The class will be very interactive and hands-on,” says Sally Olsen, the Financial Literacy Teacher at DAEC.

Starting April 19th, a nutritionist and chef will cover diverse topics like menu planning, food labels, and wholesome cooking while Olsen will cover everything from employment forms to basic budgeting and frugal grocery shopping. Students will spend class time cooking healthful recipes, locating the best bargains (financial and nutritional) at the grocery store, as well as role-playing to find solutions for typical budget crises that send so many households spiraling into chaos.
“My goal for the class,” notes Olsen, “is to plant small seeds. I hope to help people make small, significant changes or learn from past mistakes.”
Rather than assume everyone is a world-renown chef or financial guru, Olsen prefers to coach people on those seemingly simple fundamentals that contribute to healthy, stable lifestyles.

The class is free and open to all DAEC students and alumni.
