2014 Theme:
Salamu Alaikum-Wa Alaikum Salam:
Initiating and Reciprocating Peace

We say these words all the time, but what do they mean to us and to the person we're greeting with them? MYC 2014 will focus on really understanding these words and how to live by them. We will explore the many ways of activating peace in our lives and take a close look at dealing with obstacles to peace. By week's end, inshaAllah, as these words tumble from your lips, they will also make you smile.

Blast from the Past!

Can you identify these campers?

the year was 1982.

Did you miss these MYC Family stories?

Jihad Turk (life-long MYC camper, teacher, and camp dad) was honored in April by the Annenberg Foundation as a Visionary Leader.

Jihad is now President of Bayan Claremont, an Islamic Graduate School in Southern California.

Click here to watch a video about Bayan Claremont
Bayan Claremont also features several others members of our MYC family - including:
Salam Al-Marayati
Najeeba Syeed-Miller
Munir Shaikh
Hadia Attar
Edina Lekovic
Asifa Quraishi-Landes

Shahed Amanullah (camper since college and now camp dad and teacher) wrote a story about MYC for the latest US State Department publication on American Muslims. (We're on page 72!)

And be sure to look through the pictures in the whole document -- there are MYC pictures sprinkled throughout the whole thing! (kudos to MYC photographer, camper and mom, Samia El-Moslimany).

Amber Khan (first time MYC camp mom in 2013, but definitely  one of the family!) was on Tavis Smiley's PBS show this past May.

Amber made us proud, speaking about Boko Haram, Islam, women, and activism.

Linda Amrou (awesome first-time MYC counselor in 2013), was just elected to be the national president of the International Law Students Association!

The longtime MYC Khan-Turjoman family was instrumental in the story of the new mosque in Goleta (near Santa Barbara).  This article quotes our multi-talented Dalia Khan, but this picture says more than words!

So, who were they?

Munir Shaikh (center, sporting Member's Only jacket)
Baber Ali (right, flashing cool peace sign)

Munir and Baber are still regulars at MYC - both as dads to their some awesome regular MYC campers, and Munir has volunteered countless hours serving on the MYC Board of Directors.
(Now, if only we could get them to recreate that pose at campfire.)
