Kumusta mga Ka-UPAAT? Mag-papasko na naman!

With winter fast approaching, Ontario province will soon begin offering booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine to vulnerable populations who have had their last dose at least six months prior to getting the booster. Many of us took advantage of the nice weather this fall to reconnect and bond with family and friends while following public health protocols. Let us continue keeping ourselves healthy and safe as we navigate our way towards better days ahead.

UPAAT UMAGAPAY SA MGA ISKOLAR NG BAYAN

In response to the call of our Alma Mater to assist financially-challenged students during this pandemic, the UPAAT University Relations Committee spearheaded the awarding of educational assistance to five Kaagapay sa Pag-aaral Program recipients*: 1 student - UP Open University (Associate in Arts); 2 students - UP Diliman (BS Physical Education and BS Geography; 1 student – UP Mindanao (BS Agribusiness Economics); 1 student - UP Visayas (BS Biology).

The UP Kaagapay sa Pag-aaral ng Iskolar na Bayan Program is a fundraiser that aims to equip financially-challenged students with computers or laptops and internet connectivity with the shift to online mode of learning and other to restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each scholar received P110,000 covering four-year support for a total of P550,000. A virtual Meet and Greet between UPAAT’s University Relations Committee headed by Helen Balderama and the UP Foundation Executive Director Edgar Atanacio was held on November 4, 2021.

HELLO KAPITBAHAY! GOES TO MONO, ONTARIO

Motivated to see friends and to enjoy the fall foliage, thirty-six (36) UP alumni and some family members joined the Hello Kapitbahay event led by the Socials and Events Committee, on October 30 at the Out of the Blue Lifestyle Farm in Mono, Ontario.

UP alumna, Pau Velosco and her husband, Michael Jacobs, opened the doors to their 88-acre property, which, among other features, included a vineyard, a hiking trail, a Victorian period barn, and a stone house. Members first gathered in the Christmas-decorated main house. There was no shortage of food, as arriving UPAAT members filled the buffet table with their potluck contributions. Some brought pies and other sweet delicacies from local bakery, Peaceful Valley Farm.

Program host Vivienne Lotilla-dela Cruz welcomed everyone with high energy. Attendees were asked to introduce themselves, and new members Anchor Assistin and Paul Pacheco, who just arrived in Canada this year were welcomed to UPAAT. Following the introductions, Shelley Saracin and Jonna Pe spearheaded the popular TikTok game, Put Your Finger Down, where participants raise their hands in the air and put their fingers down every time they answer “yes” to any of the prompted questions. Throughout the event, the Socials & Events Committee held a raffle for highly coveted beauty and wellness prizes, care of Arbonne Canada and Art of Wellness Clinic. Diana Roldan won the main prize – a free night at Out of the Blue Lifestyle Farm.

The event concluded with Pau Veloso and her son, Ulap, touring the attendees around the property. “Thank you for visiting my home”, Pau said. “Nabuhayan yung lugar with my fellow alumni’s energy.”

WELCOME OUR SECOND COHORT OF MENTEES!

The UPAAT Mentoring Program welcomed 13 mentees to its second cohort during the virtual Mentee Orientation on October 28, 2021. The program led by the Education and Awareness Committee members continues to support Filipino-Canadian professionals in achieving their career goals.

The relevance of mentoring was highlighted by acknowledging the importance of having a mentor to be successful in navigating professional career paths especially for UP graduates who are Internationally Educated Professionals and are facing employment barriers. Mentors at the orientation shared inspirational stories of their beginnings, their career journey and successful mentoring relationships they have been involved in. The mentees will be paired with mentors, who are accomplished individuals selected from industries matching the interests of the participants. The second cohort will meet with specialists in marketing, finance, business development and technology.
