We come bearing celebratory news! One Young World (OYW), a non-profit that works towards creating a new generation of effective leaders, recently turned 11! And we’re delighted to share that we have created a picture-book on an inspiring innovation developed by a OYW Ambassador. In addition to telling you more about the book, the inspiration behind it, and the OYW Ambassadorship, the February edition of the Ladderworks Connect brings you the amazing work being done by social entrepreneurs advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goal #8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

"Virtualahan is a social enterprise that eliminates employment barriers for people with disabilities, former sex workers, drug addicts, persons in jail, indigenous people, and other disadvantaged communities who are socially excluded in the workplace. We do this through online training, remote work, life-coaching, and community-building using cost-effective and transferrable social technology." -Ryan Dawa Gersava, Founder of Virtualahan (Nominated for Spiffy's Blog by the Harvard Innovation Lab) Read the full interview on Ladderworks here

An Innovation that Provides Emergency Homes

Poof Went the Roof
Poof Went the Roof is inspired by the amazing work Madhav Datt and Kaushal Shetty are doing through Nostos Homes, an emergency shelter kit for people displaced from their homes. Will shelter kits like theirs save the day when a huge storm strikes Planet Zepedoo? Find out in this cracker of a book written by Akruti Babaria (she/her) and illustrated by Namrata Vansadia (she/her). The Inspiration for 'Poof Went the Roof'

Read Madhav's Interview with Spiffy Here
Spiffy interviews Madhav Datt, the Founder of Green the Gene. Datt was only 8-years-old when he started Green the Gene as a small environmental club in school. Today, the club has grown to become one of the world’s largest youth-run environmental non-profit. Nostos Homes, his most recent innovation, aims to put roofs over the heads of people displaced by natural calamities. It is a first-of-its-kind emergency shelter that assures security, self-sufficiency, and dignity in times of crisis and displacement.

How OYW is Creating Effective Leaders

Read Safoora's Interview Here
We spoke to Safoora Biglari, Director of Community at One Young World (OYW), to understand their Ambassadorship programme. She talks about how OYW identifies and supports Ambassadors by mentoring them, helping them with access to funds, and providing them media exposure and opportunities for public-speaking at large events. The programme aims to build a more responsible tier of leaders. Biglari also highlights why OYW awarded the Ambassadorship to Madhav Datt and how he's set the bar for effective leadership.
