Dear Leakies,

Happy Mother's Day Week. I hope it is everything that you want it to be and you know today and every day that you matter, you're appreciated, and you are loved.

We're keeping it short and simple this week because sometimes all we really need is to hear that we're ok.

So, here you go.

You are ok. You've got this. You matter. You are appreciated.

Keep loving on,

Jessica Martin-Weber

P.S. Preparing for summer travel, we did a chat about traveling with the breastfeeding baby, find Leaky tips here along with info on Mamava Lactation pods.

Breastfeeding rates are on the rise in the USA. As our culture shifts to embrace breastfeeding more, what changes do you hope to see?  READ MORE

Breastmilk, Pumping, and Oversupply

See this picture? That is all breastmilk pumped in one 45 min. sitting by one mama.
Pretty impressive!
But before you get jealous or think that you just have low supply because you don't get half that much in twice as long, let me share something with you.

This isn't normal.  READ MORE

Breast Milk Linked to Significant Early Brain Growth in Preemies

There are good reasons to prioritize preemies getting breastmilk. A new study indicates that their brains may be another good reason.

"Studying preterm infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Louis Children's Hospital, the researchers found that preemies whose daily diets were at least 50 percent breast milk had more brain tissue and cortical-surface area by their due dates than premature babies who consumed significantly less breast milk."

Breastfeeding When You Are Sick

When it comes to breastfeeding, one of the myths that drives me absolutely crazy and could actually be dangerous for your baby, is the idea that if you as a breastfeeding mom are sick, that you should discontinue breastfeeding until you feel better.

This is advice that is often given to moms by their pediatricians or obstetricians and it’s actually the complete opposite of what you want to do!  READ MORE

Making Room for Dads at the Changing Table

This isn’t anything great, just a changing table in a women’s bathroom. I took a picture of it today for one simple reason: the men’s bathroom didn’t have one. How do I know this?  Because several months ago, my husband, the dedicated and involved father of my children, went to take then 18 month old Sugarbaby to the bathroom to change her diaper. But there wasn’t a changing area in the men’s room. There was, however, this one in the ladies’ room.

Beyond our Culture's Nipple Confusion

A high school girl decides to show up at school without a bra and gets pulled out of class by security and reprimanded. Why?

I used to think that bras were primarily made to support breasts. And secondly to optionally look sexy.

How naïve of me.

It is obvious to me now that their primary purpose is to hide nipples. Female nipples. Why else would girls in middle school get teased into wearing a bra? Why else would teenage girls who have very little breast tissue have parents who insist that they put on a bra before leaving the house? “I would never allow my daughter to leave the house without a bra.” (as seen in the comment section of the above link)  READ MORE

The 10 Most Deadly Phrase in a Relationship

Actually, all of these statements are at their core a matter of the heart. If the feelings behind them aren't addressed, they could easily become the primary feelings in the relationship.

Jessica and I have had conversations about most of these, #2 being the one that comes up the most as a fear, not as an accusation. Discussing them and owning our feelings with these phrases has brought us closer together and taught us how to better communicate with each other.
