WE ARE FAMILY!! Family Member Michael Drennan attended the WSDA Rex Foundation Event where he met Cameron Sears their Executive Director. Michael is Vice Chairman of the Philadelphia Orchard Project "POP" and was able to secure a $5000 grant after applying and proving that they meet Rex’s criteria. The grant will enable POP to partner with a new community group in planting an orchard this year. $5000 is the average cost of a POP community orchard installation, including fruit trees, berry bushes, fruiting vines, accompanying herb and pollinator gardens, and other materials and supplies, as well as access to training and other technical support. They expect to plant at least 4 new orchards in neighborhoods across Philadelphia in 2017. Orchard plantings provide access to fresh fruit, beautiful green space, and opportunities for nature and nutrition education right in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods where fresh fruit is not readily available. They also hope to leverage the funding to cultivate further financial support in the form of individual, corporate and foundation contributions. The confidence shown by the Rex Foundation should be effective in helping to convince others to invest in their work.
