Voting for board positions in the IISL 2016 Elections began on June 15 and will run until July 15.

All IISL members who are eligible to vote are encouraged to do so, and voting is at the IISL member website at


25 Years of the Manfred Lachs
Space Law Moot Court Competition 

Dear Judges and Past Moot Court Participants:

For the celebrations on the first 25 years of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, we are seeking comments from Judges and former participants. We invite you to write and send a short paragraph about your experience with the competition. You may also inform us on how it has impacted your career.

The Manfred Lachs Moot Court Committee is deeply thankful to the following members for volunteering to the IISL their time, efforts, own financial resources, skills, and enthusiasm:


To Ms. Maria-Vittoria Carminati (Giugi), Regional Organizer of North America and Nathan Johnson, Associate Regional Organizer, for organizing an excellent regional competition at the Georgetown Law School, Washington D.C., US.


To Ms. Lulukewa Makapela (Lulu), African Regional Organizer, for organizing the African Regional at the Department of Trade and Industry, in Pretoria South Africa. We are thankful to her for wakening the enthusiasm on space law to a growing number of African students. 


To Mr. V. Gopalakrishnan (Gopal), Asia Pacific Regional Organizer, for supporting the Indian National Funding Round. Also, Mr. V. Gopalakrishnan and Mr. Kumar Abhijeet, the Associate Regional Organizer, guided many teams through their participation in the Asia Pacific Regional. Thank you for the excellent organization of the oral rounds at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), in Bangalore, India.  

To Prof. Dr. Sergio Marchisio, ECSL Chairman and Manfred Lachs Moot Court Committee’s Point of Contact, for leading the excellent organization of the European Regional in the University of Strathclyde, UK. Our special thanks to Mr. Nicholas Puschman, the ECSL Executive Secretary, for his tireless support in the organization of this event. 


To Dr. Zhenjun Zhang, for another successful year by giving his time and energy in the organization of the China’s National Founding Round and by serving as judge for memorials of the Asia Pacific Regional.


And To Dr. Milton Smith (Skip), for his support in the North American Regional, his work in producing a token for the Twenty-Fifth anniversary of the Competition, and for his enthusiasm to make the Guadalajara event a memorable one!
Annual Highlight Paper Writing Competition

The IISL is pleased to announce the second year
of the IISL Annual Highlight Paper competition

All practitioners and non-student academics with a minimum of five years of space law experience are eligible. The purpose of the competition is to promote and publish excellent scholarship through a blind, peer-review process.

  • Topic: The Outer Space Treaty 1967 - 2017
  • Submissions Due: 1 March 2017
  • Review Period Ends: 1 September 2017
  • Recipient Announced: 27 September 2017 (IISL General Assembly)

The reviewers will be IISL Publications Committee Co-Chairs Dr. Marietta Benkö,  Prof. Joanne Irene Gabrynowicz, and Directorate of Studies Member Dr. Steven Freeland.

IAC 2016
International Astronautical Congress
"Making Space Accessible to All Countries"

Registration is now open for the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), to be held for the very first time in Guadalajara, Mexico from 26 - 30 September 2016.
The IAC 2016, which theme is “Making Space Accessible to All Countries,” is co-organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), and will be hosted by the Mexican Space Agency (AEM).

Workshop on Space Technology for Socio-Economic Benefits: 

Integrated Space Technologies and
Applications for a Better Society

Guadalajara, Mexico, 23-25 September 2016 

The United Nations and the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) are jointly organizing a Workshop on Space Technology for Socio-Economic Benefits on the theme "Space Technologies and Integrated Applications for a Better Society" to assist Member States with building capacity in using space science, technologies and their applications in support of sustainable economic, social and environmental development.

The Workshop will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 23 to 25 September 2016 in conjunction with the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC). A limited number of Workshop participants from developing countries, selected by the United Nations and the IAF, will also be invited to attend the IAC to be held from 26 to 30 September 2016.

The deadline for application for participants seeking full or partial funding is 10 July.
