James Rendleman Col. US AF (Ret)

We are extremely sad to announce the untimely passing of our dedicated member James Rendleman. Jim was a true friend of the IISL and contributed in many ways to our work.

His friendly and always positive personality will be
dearly missed by the space law community.

Jim's funeral was Friday, September 2, 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colorado

2016 IISL Run-Off Elections
As announced last month, the recent elections resulted in a tie between two candidates for a position on the Board of Directors, and one open Vice-President’s position. Consequently, there is a run-off election to resolve the tie between Dr. Ranjana Kaul and Ms. Elina Morozova. 

No nomination forms have been submitted for the Vice-President vacancy, which means that this position remains open for the time being. 

The run-off elections started August 30 and end on September 15. 

Please cast your ballot by September 15, midnight in your timezone.

The nomination forms and brief biographies of the two candidates are still available at our website:

IISL Events at the 2016
International Astronautical Congress

59th IISL Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space
The 59th IISL Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space will be held in Guadalajara from September 26-30. The following sessions will be part of the Colloquium:
  1. 8th Nandasiri Jasentuliyana Keynote Lecture on Space Law and Young Scholars Session
  2. Legal Perspectives on Space Resources and Off-Earth Mining 
  3. Contemporary Considerations about the 1986 Principles Relating to Remote Sensing of the Earth from Space

IISL General Assembly
The annual IISL General Assembly will be held between technical sessions, on Wednesday, September 28 from 12:45am to 2:45pm, in the same room as the IISL Colloquium (Salon de Eventos 6). Documents for the General Assembly will be placed in DropBox beforehand.
IISL Awards Dinner
The annual IISL Dinner will be held on Thursday, September 29 at the Palacio Municipal de Zapopan. Bus transport will be provided, and exact timings will be announced later. If you would like to attend the IISL dinner, it is necessary to register for the dinner online at the IISL Member Website  Payment must be made through PayPal, visa, or mastercard via the website. The cost is €70 and tickets are strictly limited to 150.
Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition
The World Semi-Finals and Finals of the 25th Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition will also be held in Guadalajara this month. 

The World Semi-Finals are between North America Regional Round Winners McGill University (Canada), European Round Winners National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece),  African Round Winners Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria), and Asia-Pacific Regional Round Winners Curtin University (Australia). Semi-Finals will be held on Tuesday, September 27. The semi-finals are closed to the public
Two winners of the Semi-Finals will then progress to the World Finals on Thursday, September 29, to argue before judges from the International Court of Justice. All attendees to this year's IAC, local members of the IISL, and friends and family of finalist teams are welcome to view the World Finals. The World Finals will be held at the Paraninfo de la Universidad de Guadalajara

"Making Space Accessible to All Countries"

Registration is now open for the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), to be held for the very first time in Guadalajara, Mexico from 26 - 30 September 2016.
The IAC 2016, which theme is “Making Space Accessible to All Countries,” is co-organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), and will be hosted by the Mexican Space Agency (AEM).

Workshop on Space Technology for Socio-Economic Benefits: 

Integrated Space Technologies and
Applications for a Better Society

Guadalajara, Mexico, 23-25 September 2016 

The United Nations and the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) are jointly organizing a Workshop on Space Technology for Socio-Economic Benefits on the theme "Space Technologies and Integrated Applications for a Better Society" to assist Member States with building capacity in using space science, technologies and their applications in support of sustainable economic, social and environmental development.

The Workshop will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 23 to 25 September 2016 in conjunction with the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC). A limited number of Workshop participants from developing countries, selected by the United Nations and the IAF, will also be invited to attend the IAC to be held from 26 to 30 September 2016.

Annual Highlight Paper Writing Competition

The IISL is pleased to announce the second year
of the IISL Annual Highlight Paper competition

All practitioners and non-student academics with a minimum of five years of space law experience are eligible. The purpose of the competition is to promote and publish excellent scholarship through a blind, peer-review process.

  • Topic: The Outer Space Treaty 1967 - 2017
  • Submissions Due: 1 March 2017
  • Review Period Ends: 1 September 2017
  • Recipient Announced: 27 September 2017 (IISL General Assembly)

The reviewers will be IISL Publications Committee Co-Chairs Dr. Marietta Benkö,  Prof. Joanne Irene Gabrynowicz, and Directorate of Studies Member Dr. Steven Freeland.

for Space Sciences,

Research and Development

IISL Member Mr. Milan Mijovic is one of the founders and the president of the newly-created Serbian Office for Space Sciences, Research, and Development (SERBSPACE).
SERBSPACE’s goals are development of space sciences, improvement of research and development relating to Space, cooperation with national and international universities, associations, space agencies and companies, organization of events, congresses, workshops, and other space related activities and events.
SERBSPACE shall provide special efforts relating to development of space law, and shall provide assistance and guidance to Serbian teams engaging in the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Competition.
