Notes and Announcements
  • The Problem for the 2016 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court has been announced.
  • Reservations at the upcoming IISL Dinner in Jerusalem is now open on the IISL internal website. Payment for reservations will be online shortly.
  • Voting to resolve the tie between two candidates in the recent IISL Board of Directors election will run from August 30 to September 15.

Member Highlights

  • The IISL Wishes a Very Happy Birthday to President Emerita Isabella Diederiks-Verschoor, who turned 100 on July 29! She was the president of the IISL from 1973 to 1990.
  • Board Members Joanne Gabrynowicz and PJ Blount attended the recent multilateral meetings on an International code of conduct for outer space activities held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The programme, documents, and statements from the meetings are available at the UN PaperSmart portal.
  • All IISL Members are encouraged to update their personal profiles at http://www.iislweb.net.
Contributions to the members area should be submitted by the 20th of the preceding month to be included in the Newsletter. Contributions must abide by the guidelines and should be sent to secretary@iislweb.org.


Manfred Lachs 2016 Problem


The Case for the 2016 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition has been posted on the Lachs Moot Court website and can be downloaded from

The Case is entitled Banché v Rastalia and concerns issues of space debris, commercial spaceflight services and liability. Four regional rounds will be held in April - June 2016 in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America. The regional winning teams will compete in the World Finals to be held during the annual meeting of the International Institute of Space Law, in conjunction with the 67th International Astronautical Congress, September 26 - 30, 2016. in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Additional information, including the deadlines for registration in the regional rounds and the registration form will be posted on the Lachs Moot Court website soon.

2015 Prof. Dr. 
I.H. Ph. Diederiks-Verschoor Award for Best Space Law Paper by an Author under 30

 

 

Applications are now being accepted for the Prof. Dr I.H. Ph. Diederiks-Verschoor Award for the best paper in space law by an author under the age of 30. This award is granted annually by the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Space Law to recognize excellence in scholarly achievement among the next generation of space lawyers. The award will be presented during the annual IISL Dinner held during the IAC for which the winner will receive a complimentary ticket. In order to be eligible to apply an applicant's paper must have been accepted for presentation at the IISL Colloquium. 


 

Applicants must email the completed Entry Form along with their paper in MS Word format without name, affiliation, or any other information that could identify the author by September 24, 2015 to the IISL Executive Secretary at secretary@iislweb.org.

Members wishing to give powers of representation for the annual meeting being in Jerusalem to another member should do so in writing to secretary@iislweb.org by the deadline of September 15, 2014.

As a reminder, the annual IISL Dinner will be held The Maiersdorf Faculty Club and Conference Center, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem on October 15, 2015 after the world finals of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition. Cocktails will be served at 7:00pm and dinner will begin at 8:00pm. Members can RSVP through the member’s area of the IISL website found at http://www.iislweb.net. The price for this year's dinner is 75 Euros per person which can be paid by MasterCard, Visa, or Paypal via the website at http://www.iislweb.org.
