  • The 10th Annual Eilene Galloway Symposium on Critical Issues in Space Law will be held on December 9 at the Cosmos Club in Washington DC. Register for the event at: are only a few places left for this year's Galloway event - and if you have already registered and will not attend, please de-register.

2015 IISL Awards
In the course of the 58th IISL Colloquium in Jerusalem, the IISL conferred the following awards:
  • The Lifetime Achievement Award to Ms. Marcia S. Smith, United States.
  • The Distinguished Service Award to Prof. Dr. Sergio Marchisio, Italy.
  • The Award of Appreciation jointly to Dr. M. Stanford, United Kingdom and Dr. B. Schmidt-Tedd, Germany.
  • The Certificate of Gratitude to JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency.
  • The Prof. Dr. I.H.Ph. Diederiks-Verschoor Award to Mr. Dimitri Linden for his paper “The Impact of National Space Legislation on Private Space Undertakings: A Regulatory Competition between States?”

All awards were presented during the annual IISL dinner,
on Thursday October 15, 2015, in Jerusalem.

IISL Highlight Paper

In the course of the 66th International Astronautical Congress in Jerusalem, the IISL confirmed its approval to sponsor an Annual Highlight Paper. 2015-2016 is the first year a Highlight Paper will be selected.

All practitioners and non-student academics with a minimum of five (5) years of space law experience will be eligible; further details of eligibility and process can be obtained from the IISL Secretariat. The Deadline for submission of papers is March 1, 2016.

The reviewers for the first year are IISL Publications Committee Co-Chairs Dr. Marietta Benkö and Prof. Joanne Irene Gabrynowicz, and Directorate of Studies Member Dr. Steven Freeland. In recognition of the approaching 50th anniversary of the Outer Space Treaty, the Board selected "The Outer Space Treaty 1967-2017" as the subject of the 2015-2016 paper.

Manfred Lachs Moot Court 
World Finals in Jerusalem

The Manfred Lachs Moot Court World Finals took place in Jerusalem, Israel, on October 15, 2015.
After an impressive Final round before International Court of Justice Judges Tomka, Bhandari, and Gevorgian, the Judges awarded the Winner title to the team from University of Mississippi, School of Law, Oxford, Mississippi, US. This team received the Lee Love Award for Best Team and was also winner of the Eilene M. Galloway Award for Best Memorial.

The IISL extends congratulations to the University of Mississippi team of Mr. Ian Perry, Mr. C.J. Robison, Ms. Olivia Hoff and their Faculty Advisor, Prof. Michael Dodge, LLM., and Assistant Faculty Advisor Dr. Michael Mineiro.

The Runner Up Team was the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens team and their Faculty Advisor, Prof. George D. Kyriakopoulos and Assistant Faculty Advisor Prof. Charalampos Panagiotopoulos. A member of that team, Mr. Athanasios Plexidas, was conferred the Sterns and Tennen Award for Best Oralist. 

Warm congratulations to the Runner Up Team, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens team of Mr. Athanasios Plexidas, Ms. Maria Vasilaki, Ms. Marianthi Koutri.

Presenting the awards to them are judges Gevorgian, Bhandari and Tomka of the International Court of Justice, who presided over the Finals. 

The World Semi-Finalist titles were awarded to Obafemi Awolowo University, City of Ile-Ife, Nigeria, comprised of Ms. Peace Onashile, Mr. John Odey, Mr. Toheeb Amuda and their Faculty Advisor Dr. Akinwale Orifowomo, and the team from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, India, comprised of Ms. Chinmayi Sharma, Mr. Debarpan Ghosh, Mr. Ravishankar Krishnan, and their Faculty Advisor Prof. Balakista Reddy. 

Judges for the Semi-Finals were: Prof. Dr. Frans G. von der Dunk, Dr. Ranjana Kaul, Dr. Kai-Uwe Schrogl, Prof. Dr. Steven Freeland, Asst. Prof. Dr. Diane Howard, and Dr. Marco Ferrazzani.

Judges for Memorials were: Ms. Marcia Smith, Dr. Ulrike M. Bohlmann, Dr. Zeldine Niamh O'Brien, Ms. Icho Kealotswe, Prof. Li Juqian, Mr. Maury J. Mechanick, Esq., Prof. Vernon Nase, and Mr. Chris Okegbe. 

We heartily congratulate all these winners and thank them, the ICJ Judges, and the judges for Semi-Finals (orals and memorials) for all the efforts and enthusiasm to make this competition a memorable event.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s College of Aviation's 2nd Annual Space Traffic Management Conference “An Evolving Landscape”, will be held November 12-13 at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus in Florida. The conference will explore the next steps for collaborative, responsible, sustainable coordination of space traffic with other modalities. More at:
