We Miss Seeing You!

The mark of a good organization is that everyone has a sense of responsibility or obligation.  We are fortunate to have a competent and capable staff who model that for us and encourage our own participation, individually and as a whole congregation.   The picture above is from our weekly staff Zoom meeting held every Tuesday at 11 AM.

Honoring Popie Stafford

In September 1986, Popie began serving as Counselor in Residence and member of our church’s staff.  She and the Reverend Dr. Jimmy Adamson worked out an arrangement where Popie would provide direction for the Stephen Ministry program and facilitate marriage and family enrichment through workshops and retreats.  In exchange, Popie received an office on the church premises to conduct her marriage and family practice. For 34 years Popie has provided leadership in the form of teaching, counseling, and training of Stephen Ministers, married couples, parents, and individuals within our congregation and wider community and has worked in collaboration with dozens of church staff personnel.

Now Popie is in the process of stepping away from these work-related roles and the ministry responsibilities she has fulfilled so faithfully and effectively.  In April she attended her last Stephen Ministry Leaders meeting and at the end of this month she will attend her last church staff meeting.  At the end of August, she will conclude her marriage and family practice and close her Counselor in Residence office at the church.

Once it is possible for us to gather again as a congregation, we will host a reception to honor Popie and the investment she has made in our community.  Meanwhile, we encourage you to send an expression of gratitude for Popie’s ministry among us and the enduring value of her influence as: an enthusiastic leader, an affirming encourager,  a marriage promoter,  a consistent communicator, a compassionate counselor, a loyal friend, a generous host, a devoted teacher/trainer, an eager connector, and a reliable supporter.

Growing Our Faith

Adult Discipleship Class taught by Rev. Dr. Kent A. Webber

 "Biblical Principles for Political Decision-Making"
Tuesday, 4:30 - 5:45 PM via Zoom, May 19 through June 23
Course Study Guide available upon request: Kent@fpcsantarosa.org

As Reformed (Presbyterian) Christians, descendants of the sixteenth-century Swiss Reformers Calvin and Zwingli, our hallmark is that Scripture is our single authoritative guide for faith and practice.  This means that in terms of our political convictions and involvements we should look to Scripture for guidance as we seek to follow Jesus.  There is a dangerous misunderstanding in our American culture that since our constitution enshrines the separation of church and state, this means that faith and politics must also be kept separate as well.  Nothing could be further from our biblical mandate!

Obviously this is a controversial area and Kent's purpose is not to affirm either the Republican or Democratic Party platform, but to seek to understand God's guidance for our political decision-making as elaborated in Holy Scripture.

We will consider a number of questions which have political implications including:
  • What does it mean that Jesus Christ is Lord?
  • What are the biblical dimensions of Sin and Salvation?
  • What does it mean to have dominion over creation?
  • What is the Bible's view concerning the value of human life?
  • How did Jesus deal with the temptation to use violence to achieve God's goals?
  • How are we to view the poor and most vulnerable in ours and other societies?
  • How does God want us to respond to racism?
  • How are Christians called to relate to the governing authorities?

Church News

Congratulations to Alicia Minkel pictured in last Sunday’s Press Democrat list of Youth Service Award nominees.  These seniors are selected by their school for their volunteer service in one of ten categories.  Alicia represents Maria Carrillo High School in the category of the Arts.

Congratulations also to Karen Crow who along with her daughter Nicole Marlatt were pictured as winners of the Press Democrat’s annual mother-daughter lookalike sweepstakes (Sonoma Life, Section D).

Pray for the Nominating Committee — Michelle Kirby (chair), Jim Bankson, Pat Cuneo, Steve Frary, Diane Niles, Bob Shoulders, Carolee Verdier – as they undertake the task of nominating elder and deacon candidates to serve as prospective church officers in the Class of 2023.
