Re-Opening Task Force Update

With the summer surge of the coronavirus and increasing numbers of positive cases in California and within Sonoma County, our church leadership is choosing a course of caution and care when considering plans to reopen our church facilities. Rather than set a target date for the gathering of small groups and/or in person worship, the Reopen Task Force submitted its report to Session outlining health conditions which must be met along with standard practices of church participants that must be followed in order for us to resume these activities in a safe and meaningful way.

The Task Force’s recommendations for our church follow the safety criteria outlined by the State of California’s four stages:

Stage 1: Safety and preparedness (stay-at-home order)
  • Online worship and classes; communications via internet and mail; meetings via zoom
Stage 2: Low-risk workplaces (essential businesses can open with modification)
  • Continue stage one and consider start of in-person small group gatherings of 10 or less while observing health guidelines
Stage 3: Higher-risk workplaces (more businesses, services, and limited gatherings)
  • Allows for indoor gatherings in our sanctuary for in-person worship (25% capacity = 100 people or less), memorials, and funerals while observing health guidelines.
Stage 4: End stay-at-home order (resume activities, large gatherings, and travel)
  • Resume all church related activities without restrictions
The presence of the virus and the choices of our population have made the future unpredictable.  Health guidelines change with the rise and decline of the virus. The State says we are in Stage 2; however, recent developments might see us moving backwards rather than forward. Therefore, Session will implement these recommendations with all the necessary precautions only after a steady decline of the virus is evident.

The results from our congregational survey (click here to view the survey results) indicates the vast majority of our congregation agrees with such a deliberate and careful approach toward the use of our facilities. When it is safe to do so, our first step will be to gather people together in groups of 10 or less (preferably outdoors), regulated by social distancing guidelines. We believe it is important to see one another and be together for a brief period of time. But for now, we will wait until the conditions are safe to do so. Meanwhile we will continue to concentrate our efforts to do church from a distance.

Financial Report

At the mid-point of this fiscal year our financial picture is strong.  Financial recording of donations during the pandemic depends on the timing of mail delivery. Although June giving totals were lower than budget, resulting in a deficit position, our overall picture looks good.  The pattern of our congregational giving remains strong and Session applied for and received a government PPP loan which once applied to payroll and related expenses is eligible to be forgiven.
