At Healthy Greater Bendigo we are excited for the weather to warm up, days to get longer and the food to get brighter. This September newsletter is welcoming spring and all the new exciting produce this time of year has to offer.

Why Placement Students Add Value

Healthy Greater Bendigo would like to introduce Grace and Maddie. Grace and Maddie are current La Trobe Health Science students on a 10 week placement with the Healthy Greater Bendigo team.

Throughout their time on placement, they have had the opportunity to meet so many friendly and welcoming people here at the council and learn what it is like to work as a health promoter in the workforce. Maddie and Grace would like to thank Amy and the team at Healthy Greater Bendigo for providing them with the opportunity to experience what it is really like to work in their chosen field. With the help of Amy and the team, Maddie and Grace have learnt so much and look forward to entering the working world after university with the confidence that they have gained from their placement.

Here are five reasons it is worth taking on a student:

  1. You gain a person who is only months away from being fully qualified;
  2. Students are equipped with up-to-date theory and an awareness of the contemporary approaches used in practice;
  3. You get the opportunity to feed back to education institutions and shape their curriculum so students graduate with the skills necessary for smooth entry into the workplace;
  4. You get to mould students into the kinds of workers your team and industry need; and
  5. Best of all, students are enthusiastic!

 Food Share - Grow a Row

As we saw in the Active Living Census data, 1 in 10 Greater Bendigo House holds to not have enough food, with some areas increasing that number to 1 in 5.
Food Share give out food relief to around 90 local charities, community groups and schools to hand out food relief in the best way possible to their communities, this allows for the reduction of low income families and individuals feeling the stigma surrounding food insecurity.
Healthy Greater Bendigo caught up with Sam Kane; the Project Officer at YouFoods to talk about all the new and exciting things that Food Share have on the rise.
"We are excited to announce that our Grow a Row, Pick a Branch has received a boost to the program from UFS Pharmacies Bendigo! This partnership will see some fabulous initiatives created for the program starting with our Grow a Row Potato! 3 generous local businesses - UFS Pharmacies Bendigo, Bunnings Epsom and Bush's Produce Stores have together donated a HUGE 190 Kilograms of seed potato to be distributed to schools and kinders, community groups and keen home gardeners in Bendigo and surrounds." - Food Share Bendigo

If you'd like to grow potatoes, or to enquire about this project contact Bridget Bentley; manager@bendigofoodshare.org.au and keep following our socials for more updates and an exciting partnership launch!
