Here at Healthy Greater Bendigo we love encouraging everyone in the community to stay active. With the weather warming up and more active spaces opening their gates, there is no better time to get outside, enjoy the beautiful spring sunshine and explore the many active spaces that Greater Bendigo has to offer.

First up a little bit about what the team has been up to recently.
Nourish Network Webinar
The Nourish Network webinar, Levers for Change: Strategies to move to healthy food retail, was held on Tuesday 5th October.

We hope you found the presentations and panel discussion as interesting and inspiring as we did.

Healthy Supermarkets Community of Practice 
On Monday 11th of October, Healthy Greater Bendigo led and presented at the Healthy Supermarkets Community of Practice.

The event was attended by 79 people, with representatives from 3 state health departments, health promotion practitioners from across Victoria, ACT, and New South Wales, 4 universities, a retailer and Vichealth. 

This was the first time many participants had an opportunity to learn from a supermarket industry insider.

The event closed with a look to the future of the Healthy Supermarkets Network which has been transitioned from Healthy Greater Bendigo to now come under the auspices of the Nourish Network.

HGB would like to extend their thanks to the presenters and all that attended the event.

Valued based communication training
Healthy Greater Bendigo is teaming up with Common Cause this November and December, to deliver values based communication training. 

Common cause encourages all
 campaigners, communicators, organisers, fundraisers and leaders of progressive organisations to get involved in this training to build communication skills in delivering effective messaging.

The importance of staying active 
Maintaining regular physical activity is beneficial for both your mental and physical health and wellbeing, and is linked to reducing illness and disease. Exercise is also a great way to meet new people and  stay social!

The Australian physical activity guidelines recommend adults participate in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. Currently, just 1 in 2 Loddon Campaspe residents are meeting these guidelines according to 2019 Active Living Census data.

Some tips to incorporating more physical activity into your day include: 
- Utilise active transport and walk or ride to work instead of driving
- Use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift 
- Park a few blocks away from your destination and walk the rest of the way
- Take a walk on your lunch break 
- Organise a walking meeting
- Walk over to a colleagues desk instead of messaging them
Make a splash in our aquatic spaces 
With the weather warming up, pools across Bendigo are beginning to fill up and open the gates to swimmers. There is no better time to jump in the deep end and try something new!

Swimming is a great low impact activity to stay fit and have fun this summer. Swimming is an effective way to reduce stress levels and the perfect way to cool off after a long day at work.

If something less structured is needed to relax after a busy week in the office, head out to Lake Eppalock for a weekend on the water.

Free Tai Chi Classes at Dai Gum San
Tai Chi classes are being held at Dai Gum San every Wednesday morning of spring from 10am to 10:45am. 

These 45 minute classes are free, for all abilities and family friendly.

These classes will teach you how to practice mindfulness and move your body whilst taking full advantage of one of Bendigo's beautiful outdoor spaces.

Move for Mental Health 
Bendigo Health is running a virtual fitness and fundraising challenge for the month of October and its not too late to join in!

This challenge is for all abilities and will raise vital funds to improve mental health services and provide exercise programs for those living with mental health issues in the Loddon Mallee region.

Simply register online as an individual, family or work team, set a fitness and fundraising goal and share your progress online with #2021moveformentalhealth. 

They are currently just over half way to their fundraising goal of $60,000. Help them get there by registering or donating at the link below!

Citizen Science in prevention
Citizen Science in prevention is an exciting way to engage and work with members of the community to increase physical activity and public space usage. It involves engaging the public and collaborating in scientific research to collect data and increase shared knowledge. 

Advantages of using Citizen Science include:
- The ability to generate local data and knowledge 
- Enhance community engagement and contributions to bring about change
- Ensures actions are driven by community needs and priorities

Check out how this approach  has been used in rural Tasmania to support walkability.

Future Healthy Survey
The VicHealth team and Healthy Greater Bendigo want to create a Victoria where no young person is denied a future that is healthy. No matter their postcode, bank balance, background or ability.

If you are aged between 18-25 or a parent of kids, you can help make this a reality!
