On Monday the 23rd of August, the Healthy Systems Network heard from Bendigo Community Health Services about the 5 ways to Wellbeing. We learnt how each sector can use the 5 ways to wellbeing framework and discussed how organisations can work together to implement to 5 ways across Greater Bendigo.
What are the 5 ways to wellbeing?
The 5 ways to wellbeing are five simple but effective ways to improve your heath and wellbeing. Any individual or organisation that uses the 5 ways to wellbeing in daily life are shown to be happier and healthier.
The 5 ways are:

1. Connect: Connect with people around you; with family, friends, and neighbours. Think of these social connections as important in your life and spend time developing them. Building these relationships will support and strengthen you every day.

2. Be Active: Being active and moving your body helps you stay fit and healthy, both mentally and physically.

3. Give: Helping others can give you a sense of purpose and belonging. It can also assist in building friendships and making your community a better place. It’s as simple as do something kind for a friend or stranger, thanking someone, smiling or saying hello.

4. Take NoticeTaking notice and slowing down helps you feel calm and relaxed. It’s about learning to enjoy each moment and being aware of the ‘here and now’.

5. Keep Learning: Learning new things and challenging your mind will give you a sense of achievement. Learn something new regularly. Learning can be fun. It can give you a sense of achievement and build your confidence.

A systems approach
Every sector can use the 5 ways to wellbeing to create environments to promote wellbeing. Whether you work for a not-for-profit, local government or private organisation you too can make an impact on the wellbeing of your community.

Through understanding the elements that impact wellbeing, we have the opportunity to work in collaboration to facilitate the development of environments that allow for the community to improve their health and wellbeing.

How can you use your work to promote the 5 ways to wellbeing?

How much time do you have for the 5 ways?
Whether you have 1 minute, 1 hour or may even longer, there are always ways to implement the 5 ways to wellbeing into your life and organisations.

It takes 1 minute to message a friend and connect or to help someone with their bags. It takes one hour to participate in a gym class or join a club to learn something new.

Have even longer?

Mindkit.org has developed a time dependant list of activities to improve your wellbeing.
