Winemaker's Note
Greetings from Shaw Vineyard! 2019 has been a busy growing season for a variety of reasons. Primarily, the large amount of rain we’ve received for several seasons – especially last fall and early this spring -- has created a strong weed cycle for weeks on end that has proven difficult to manage. Since Shaw is committed to sustainable practices, the emphasis on mechanical weed removal means long days on the tractor dragging blades slowly and cautiously.
That being said, the 2019 vintage is shaping up nicely. Veraison (grape ripening) was slightly behind the average but sometimes this can lead to the most interesting vintages if the fall weather cooperates. As I scan the rows and varietals, I am pleased by the quality of the fruit.
Projects continued this season. We have acquired a Bucher basket press to further experiment with drawing consistent quality out from our red grapes. In addition, the growing partnerships started three seasons ago have added 7 acres of vinifera both in Himrod and Hector, contributing to the diversity of our already successful growing sites. This has been a lot work but both new vineyards are on the cusp of regular production.
We’d love to see you in our tasting room this harvest season! These are some of the aged wines that are now bottled and available for purchase in addition to other available wines:
2011 Merlot
2012 Cabernet Sauvignon
2013 Pinot Noir
2010 Keuka Hill Reserve (Bordeaux-style Red Blend)
Thank you for your continued interest in Shaw and our wines. If you haven’t yet been at the tasting room this season, we look forward to seeing you in the coming months. Of course, visiting more than once a season is highly encouraged!
~ Steve
