Winemaker's Note

Uncertainty prevails but the harvest continues.

We've been honored by the support and patronage of so many long-time customers this year. We are pleased that Shaw wines continue to be part of your life and that you value our artisanal emphasis on sustainable vineyard management, gentle processing, and cellar aging.

As always, we were happy to welcome new customers who bring their curiosity and love for wine to our tasting room. Hopefully we will welcome you back over and over again.

Despite the obvious challenges this year due to the pandemic, the growing season has been bright, sunny, and hot. The Finger Lakes can in some years have too much rain. This year, we've been in a prolonged drought that has brought some interesting stress to the vines. For most of the mature vines, this has resulted in beautiful clusters with ripe, flavorful fruit and low yields.

I'm very much looking forward to evaluating the 2020 vintage in the coming years as we age both the reds and whites. If approached correctly, this could be a stand-out year for most varietals.

As you consider visiting Shaw this fall harvest, we are offering these wines for your enjoyment:

2017 Riesling, Road Block Reserve
NV Pinot Grigio, Li Bella
2018 Pinot Noir Rosé
2017 Gewürtztraminer
2019 Chardonnay
2017 Orange Pinot Grigio, Vin Rustique
2013 Pinot Noir Reserve
2012 Cabernet Franc Reserve
2012 Keuka Hill Reserve (Bordeaux Blend)
2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

1.5L of select reds avaliable

Thank you all for your support during this difficult time. Please stay safe and healthy.

A Red in the Making

We bottled our 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve this spring, which is now available in the tasting room.

This seems like a good moment to emphasize the importance of cellar aging at Shaw Vineyard. During the 2012 harvest, these grapes were fermented whole berry (never crushed) and then moved by conveyer for a pressing after a prolonged soak and fermentation. The skin contact at Shaw is best measured in weeks.

After additional malolactic fermentation, this wine was treated to our signature extended barrel aging, primarily in neutral oak, to highlight the unique viticulture of our estate vineyard. The result is a wine that is deep but restrained, still developing as we speak.

We welcome you to stop by to try the Cabernet Sauvignon and our other five new releases.
