Winemaker's Note
A New Website, New Buildings, New Vineyards...2017 at Shaw Vineyard!
We have a new website. Check it out here! Happy to receive feedback and we'll update content as time goes on.
Throughout 2017 we've been adding storage, production, and office space with new renovations, and have been updating our signage. More details to come.
As a long-time grower of vinifera in the Finger Lakes (first vinifera vineyard planted in 1981) I'm often approached to form growing partnerships. Earlier this spring, I formed two separate partnerships and planted two vineyards. The first is in a 9-acre parcel across the road from Shaw Vineyard; the second is on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake.
The potential for new and interesting grape sources is tremendous. The digging of thousands of feet of drain tile alone provided different challenges and revealed varying soil elements and types at each site.
The photo at the top of the newsletter is of grow tubes, used to enhance the first stage of growth of the recently-planted Riesling vines shown. Most vineyards take 4-5 years to reach full production.
2016-2017 was a mild winter with minimal bud damage, especially after two record-breaking cold winters in previous seasons. The sheer amount of rain this year is a challenge, but hopefully my experience in growing the European varieties will help produce the quality fruit necessary for fine wines.
I hope to have more details to share at harvest time. In other news, our wines continue to do well with critics. We were recently honored with great scores by the Wine Enthusiast Magazine for our handcrafted wines. Stop by and have a taste this summer or fall.
