Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB), an invasive pest, was detected Dec. 23, 2013 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam (JBPHH) on coconut trees. A joint effort between USDA, UH at Manoa, U.S. Navy, HDOA and other partners has mobilized and an Incident Command System (ICS) has been established to respond to this pest emergency.

September 27 – October 31, 2015
- Detections
- On Base (All DOD property on O`ahu; including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPH-HI))
- 78 adults/0 larvae detected of 2217 adults/2018 larvae total detected since 12/23/2013.
- Off Base:
- 18 adults/0 larvae detected of 220 adults total detected since 12/23/2013.
- Surveillance
- 1 CRB damaged coconut palm was confirmed at Ewa Beach Golf Course.
- 2 CRB damaged coconut palms were removed in Nanakuli. No CRB adults or larvae were recovered.
- 7 mulch piles were inspected/reinspected in the Waianae-Lualualei area.
- 7 new delimiting survey panel traps were placed in the Waianae-Lualualei area.
- 8 new delimiting survey panel traps were placed at the Navy-Marine Golf Course at JBPH-HI.
- 23 new delimiting survey panel traps were placed in the Ewa Beach-Iroquois Point (JBPH-HI) area.
- 25 CRB damaged coconut palms were confirmed at Navy-Marine Golf Course at JBPH-HI.
- 125 barrel traps are currently in active service on Oahu.
- 2,592 panel traps are currently in active service on Oahu.
- Mitigation
- Dead beetle remains were found during breeding site surveys on JBPH-HI property bordering Ewa Beach Golf Course. This site was previously found positive for CRB larvae, but after safe-guarding with netting, subsequent surveys have turned up negative for any beetles or larvae. Monitoring of the site continues.
- Research
- 5 adult CRB were found in experimental palm crown nets at the Pu`uloa Range site by UH CTAHR researchers.
- Research is still underway to better understand the cyclic nature of weekly, monthly, and annual trap capture rates.
- Beetle Fact
- Damage can appear as V-shaped cuts in the fronds or holes in the midrib (Schmaedick, 2005).
