Chipembele news June 2022

Dear Chipembele supporter,

This year has got off to a busy start for Chipembele with our regular 32 conservation clubs now running in 20 local schools in our 4 main zones during term time reaching about 1000 children every 2 weeks, and our community meetings engaging with 64 community groups a month. Additionally, we have already been able to run 6 trips with our bespoke Mobile Education Unit (MEU), which enables our Conservation Educators to engage with very remote community groups such as women’s clubs, farming co-operatives, church groups, business associations, village elders, schools and Community Resource Boards. Our educators have used this opportunity to distribute the latest issues of our Kalata for Kids magazines which are full of interesting facts, games and pictures to inspire children to learn more about nature.

Aspiring Conservation Leader (ACL) programme

In other news, we have selected 10 new participants for our year-long intensive Aspiring Conservation Leader (ACL) programme for the top school leavers from our conservation clubs to help bridge the gap from school to tertiary level courses in conservation or a conservation-related career. They have been busy with a resilience-building field-based camping trip, lectures, teaching in conservation clubs and work experience placements with other conservation NGOs working in the area to gain valuable hands-on experience.

New recruits: Student Support Officer and intern

Purity Kalenge

has recently been recruited as our Student Support Officer, Purity Kalenge, to manage and expand our student sponsorship programme and to develop a new gender equality programme, in addition to providing career advice and mentoring our students. She has a BA in English Language and curriculum development from the University of Zambia, and experience of working with NGOs and schools in the areas of student sponsorship, gender, guidance counselling, mentoring and teaching.

Penelope Kamungwa

just graduated with a merit in a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Education from the University of Zambia. Penny was sponsored through Chipembele at school from Grade 8 to 12 and at university for 4 years. Penny was a very active participant in the Chipembele conservation education programme in schools. She is passionate about raising awareness in a broad range of environmental issues and is currently interning with Chipembele for a year.

Conservation hut in Lusaka

The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation are funding the creation of a Wildlife Discovery Centre in Lusaka National Park, which is currently being built in partnership with Game Rangers International. As part of the Centre, there are three Conservation Huts available for NGOs to showcase their work. As a collaborative project between Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust, Conservation South Luangwa, Zambian Carnivore Programme and Project Luangwa, there will be a hut featuring South Luangwa to highlight conservation issues specific to the area and the work being done to address them. The mural has been painted by an artist local to Mfuwe, David Mweetwa. The official opening will be in early August 2022.
