Rollers & ink at Medway Fine Printmakers

Medway Fine Printmakers

New classes, printmaking experiments + a bit of peace & quiet

We've enjoyed our first two months at INTRA and have been welcoming a growing group of printmakers through our doors for open access. It's always exciting to see the projects and ideas that people bring in to us. Recently we've had experimental screen printing with bleach, Thermofax prints with foil and flock effects on textiles, vinyl cut stencils, and lots of fun in our children's workshops printing monster designs.

We've added new courses to our programme and open access is running every Wednesday 11am - 9pm, and by appointment on other days.
Get in touch if you'd like to join us for a class or just want to pop in for a look around the printmaking studio.

Drypoint & Non-toxic Etching

Etching by Peta Bridle
Some lovely prints have rolled out of the etching press since its return, including highly detailed acetate drypoints by Peta Bridle. For these prints Peta used a diamond tip tool to allow her to draw freely into an acetate plate. This month we're running a two-morning drypoint course with Elizabeth Kelleher where you can try out this technique on metal or acetate plates - a great introduction to intaglio.

The etching process at Medway Fine Printmakers uses non-toxic metal salt solutions to bite metal plates instead of more hazardous traditional acids. On a two-day non-toxic etching course with Heather Haythornthwaite, you can learn how to use this process with hard and soft grounds, to etch and print zinc plates.

If you have experience of intaglio printing, but could use some help improving your technique, come along to Jane Furst's sessions held on the last Wednesday of each month 1-4pm, and other Wednesdays by request.

Jane can give one-to-one advice, demonstrate techniques, and will have her collection of etching tools on hand for use in these sessions. Price is £10 (£8 concessions) on top of the open access session fee.

Shiny! Fuzzy!

Traditional screen printing with photo stencils is very popular and we teach a two day introductory course twice a month. It's perfect for large work, but if you're creating something smaller, another stencil method called 'thermofax' may be more convenient and it's been going down a storm at INTRA. You can make an A5 thermofax stencil from your artwork and put it on a frame ready to print in about 15 minutes. We're running a four hour thermofax class where you can make your own screen and combine your prints with effects using a heat press and textiles to add shiny foil effects, and fuzzy flocked colours. Warning - it's a bit addictive!

Coming soon...

Artist Liz Miller will be spending a week with us in July after winning the Medway Fine Printmakers residency prize at Margate's 'Pushing Print' festival last year. Liz specialises in etching techniques and will be running a two day course in photopolymer etching (also known as solar plate) in September, to coincide with a group print exhibition at Rochester Art Gallery, with Xtina Lamb and Adam Piper.

Medway Open Studios

We will be taking part in Medway Open Studios this summer (July 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20) over both of the event's weekend dates plus late opening on the Friday. On show will be work made at Medway Fine Printmakers, free demos of the processes we work with, tours of the print studio, print activities for all ages including the ever popular 'Print Your Own...' bag, flag, cushion or t-shirt, plus a workshop where you can print on slabs of jelly! Please check our website or Facebook page for updates.

It's, so... quiet

Visitors who came along to INTRA during April may be interested to know that the bangs & crashes from upstairs have given way to peaceful silence, as the gym has closed down. So if you want to hear death metal and ghastly groans while working on the presses, you'll need to supply your own!
