Rollers & ink at Medway Fine Printmakers

Medway Fine Printmakers

Open Studios in July saw 175 visitors come to INTRA, taking tours of our print studio, seeing printmaking in action with some of our regular open access artists working, and joining in on workshops - including one where we made monoprints with firm slabs of gelatine!

This month we have exhibitions, new courses, our artist in residence Liz Miller has been making photopolymer etching plates, and we're gearing up to take part in the 20:20 print exchange.

Upcoming Exhibitions

Photopolymer etching by Liz Miller
Next week our exhibition ‘Beyond Boundaries‘ opens at Rochester Art Gallery featuring prints from Xtina Lamb, Adam Piper and our first artist in residence at Medway Fine Printmakers, Liz Miller. In the craft case will be small prints shown alongside the plates, blocks and tools that they were made with, by Jane Furst (mezzotint), James Worse (letterpress), Jane Prangnell (linocut) and Peta Bridle (drypoint). Join us for the preview night on Thursday 21st August, 6.30pm - 8.30pm. The show runs 22 August - 11 October at the Visitor Centre in Rochester High Street. Free admission.

MChildren after a Print Your Own workshopedway Council are generously supporting us to offer a selection of our courses at half the normal price while the exhibition is on. The adult ones sold out very quickly, but we still have places for our all ages favourite ‘Print Your Own…’ where you can print your choices from over 50 designs + the alphabet onto a flag, bag, cushion cover or t-shirt.

The Victoria Group of printmakers from Gravesend uses our studio every month, and they currently have their work on show at our near neighbours Café Moroc.

Peta's highly detailed drypoint etchings were much admired during Open Studios, and she also has a show of her etchings and paintings coming up at Southwark Cathedral, from 23rd August - 3rd October. We still have some of Peta's prints in our shop too, and will soon be selling postcards of her work.

New Courses

Explore the beautiful textures, wide variety of marks and tonal effects that can be achieved with collagraph, using a hybrid of relief and intaglio techniques. Kristiina Sandoe leads two collagraph classes this weekend, and again in September. You'll build up a textured plate using a variety of materials, perhaps including string, sand or cardboard, and print using the etching press. Day two includes chine collé where thin papers are collaged during the printing process.

Linocut in progress by Nick MorleyWe've lured Nick Morley (aka Linocut Boy from Margate's Hello Studio) up from the coast to run a one day linocut workshop in September. Carving a block removes areas from the printing surface, and several of our presses can be used to make your prints.

Liz Miller's photopolymer etching course was quick to sell out. This environmentally friendly method retains very fine detail and is excellent for collages, photographic images and artwork with tone. We'll be adding more dates soon, let us know if you're interested in being notified about them.

20:20 Print Exchange

Organised by Hot Bed Press in Salford, the 20:20 print exchange involved 40 print studios and 525 artists in 2013. We're taking part again this year and will be creating new editions of 25 prints in the format 20cm x 20cm. In return we will each receive box sets of 20 prints from other artists in the project.

INTRA Activities

If you're interested in creative activities beyond printmaking, you might like some of the workshops coming up at INTRA. In sewing classes with Alison Blackburn you can create an A-Line wrap skirt (31st August), cushion cover (13th September) or learn how to alter your clothes to fit (20th September).

Sara Wordley from The Skiving Scholar Studio will be running a silver clay workshop where you can make a pendant and charms, modelled in clay and fired to 99.9% real fine silver - like magic!
