Is chewing gum a healthy habit?
You are regularly warned about sugar consumption, making candy, soda, gum, and other sweet treats seem rather evil. However, not all that is sweet is sugary. There are many tasty and sugar-free alternatives, made with artificial sweeteners or sugar substitutes. These products generally do not endanger oral health. In fact, sugarless gum, sweetened with xylitol and sorbitol has a number of oral health benefits:
  • Sorbitol has been shown to reduce the risk of decay.
  • Xylitol can also reduce risk of decay, as well as certain secondary infections.
  • The act of chewing gum stimulates saliva flow.
  • Gum can help remove particles from your teeth if you are unable to brush after snacking.
Next time you’re tempted to toss a pack of gum in your shopping cart, don’t hesitate – but make sure it’s the right type.
You smile could be paying the price for your stress
More and more, we are becoming aware of the potential impact that stress can have on health. You may be surprised to learn that includes oral health. Poor hygiene habits are often blamed for decay, gum disease, and other oral health conditions. Although that is a common cause, it is not the only factor.

Clenching or grinding teeth, a condition known as bruxism, can occur during sleep or while awake, and it is a common response to stress or anger. It can cause wear and tear on the teeth or even fractures, which, can lead to infection, decay, gum disease, and other oral health conditions. Like the rest of your body, your teeth need good nutrition to maintain optimal health. Eating habits are often the first thing to fall victim to a hectic schedule, so stress and poor nutrition often occur simultaneously.

Although it may be tempting to skip dental appointments if your schedule is already overbooked, this may be the worst possible time to neglect your smile.
