Can brushing and flossing help to keep your heart healthy?

“Only brush the teeth you want to keep.” It is a common joke among dentists, and it is also a very true statement. Brushing and flossing are crucial for preventing periodontal disease, the number one cause of adult tooth loss in developed nations. However, you may not be aware that poor hygiene and periodontal disease can endanger much more than your teeth.

A number of scientific studies conducted over the past two to three decades have repeatedly drawn the same conclusion: There is a link between oral health and heart health. It has been demonstrated that individuals with good oral hygiene habits and healthy gums are statistically less likely to develop heart disease. Although the nature of the link is not yet fully understood, it certainly underlines the importance of regular dental care.

Psychological and social benefits of cosmetic dentistry

Doesn’t it feel great to look great? Actually, it does. Researchers say that self-confidence is strongly linked to a person’s satisfaction with his or her appearance, and we are not just judging ourselves.

  • A survey conducted by the AACD revealed that over 99 percent of American adults consider an attractive smile to be important
  • According to researchers for Dove, less than five percent of women consider themselves beautiful
  • University of the West of England researchers determined that 80 percent of men experience anxiety about their appearances
  • Cosmetic dentistry can correct aesthetic flaws, and give you a beautiful, confident smile
