Autumn news and a special offer from Ryman

I had a very positive response to my first newsletter issued in the summer and plenty of new subscribers; I hope you enjoy this one too. As well as items that I hope you'll find interesting and useful, we are delighted to have negotiated an exclusive discount voucher to be spent at Ryman Stationery for all our subscribers. Owned by Theo Paphitis, Ryman Stationery, who power #SBS, has over 230 stores nationwide, and an extended range of stationery, technology, furniture and office supplies which can be found on their website ryman.co.uk.  I was delighted to be one of Theo's #SBS winners in 2011.

Since last time, I have been travelling, training, meeting some fabulous people, writing articles, learning - and holidaying. One of the biggest events was the Office* Show at Olympia in October organised by the totally professional David Maguire and his team at Diversified; it was fantastic and you can find out more about what we did and see all the photos at the website and Facebook page. I can highly recommend this event for all PAs, Office Managers and administrators; keep up to date with registration for next year 7-8 October

I have written articles for several magazines, including Executive Secretary magazine; this publication is an absolute must for any PAs or administrators, with articles on a huge range of topics by experts in so many different fields.  The Editor, Lucy Brazier, has created an invaluable and extremely elegant magazine.

I presented a live webinar for Business Management Daily on Pitman shorthand and BakerWrite speedwriting with me in Stockport, the moderator in Toronto, the organiser in Washington and online attendees from all over the US and the world.

I was the subject of an article in the Greater Manchester Chamber Business Week magazine and have recently written a couple of Friday blogs for the Chamber too.

I am doing more 1:1 coaching via Skype and this included a PA in Melbourne, Australia, this month.

My publisher, UoLearn.com, had some weekly special offers of free books. Visit the website as they often have new offers available on the range of training books.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we are pleased to welcome Guernsey College of Further Education to our list of licensed BakerWrite speedwriting trainers.

So what does next year hold? Return trips to the Middle and Far East and potentially other parts of the world too, speaking at trade events and PA conferences, new courses to develop, a lot of writing to do and new and familiar clients in the UK. There is also the pleasure of meeting PAs in so many different circumstances - at courses, at networking events or just in the course of everyday life.

My business writing seminar at the Office* Show at Olympia. Attendees were also able to share good practice with each other. I was delighted with the feedback I received.

You can build a productive partnership between managers and PAs

During a recent administrators' workshop, I was asked by an aspiring PA what I thought she should be doing to move from her current role into a PA role.

I suggested that building relationships was key to her progress. She should collaborate and learn from colleagues and managers and aim to be seen as a professional in her field.

I advised her to join networking groups for PAs such as EuMA in Europe or Behind Every Leader in the USA. It is also a good idea to take advantage of social networks such as LinkedIn.  There are hundreds of discussion groups for PAs and many opportunities for learning.

I suggested she subscribe to good quality PA magazines and, of course, attend any training opportunities she is offered or requests.

We also discussed the possibility of her finding a mentor to advise and inspire her.
