November news, an offer from Ryman Stationery, hints, tips and photos ... read on!

This year has been amazing; I have travelled the world more than ever, met some fantastic people and, as well as having the opportunity to get PAs together to share good practice and help them find ways to improve the way they work, I have also learnt so much from all of them.  Language, culture, their techniques and experiences .. their stories.

Since the last newsletter there have been courses such as various PA/EA masterclasses (including bespoke in-house sessions), Office Managers' workshops, BakerWrite speedwriting, minute taking, business writing, chairing meetings and another BakerWrite speedwriting/Pitman shorthand webinar for Business Management Daily (watch out for exciting news of more specialised webinars in 2015).

We had a stand at the terrific 2014 Office* Show at Olympia and I was also delighted to be invited back to speak again.  Here is a photo from the the "Art of Communications" session :

There was a half day presentation on communications for the PA Life Conference at Earl's Court :

What a great group that was!

Trips to Manchester, a few times to Dubai and London, Edinburgh, Durham, Cambridge and return trips to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

This year also included Australia for the first time; facilitating EA masterclasses in Sydney and Melbourne.  Here are the two brilliant groups of EAs, not just from Australia, but also from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Solomon Islands :

There have been articles published in Executive Secretary Magazine; it is a delight to be included with all the expert writers the Editor, Lucy Brazier, finds for this excellent magazine (find out more).

I am very proud of my Prince's Trust mentee, Georgia, who is the founder of Trails for Tails.  Her passion for dogs and her business is inspiring and we're going to work together to ensure the success of her venture.

She shares some great articles on her Facebook page too.

This quarter we have an generous offer from Ryman's Stationery :

We are delighted to welcome Activity Group to the family of BakerWrite licensed trainers.

The winner from our Office* Show draw was Sheela Patel; congratulations.  Sheela has won 2 months' free access to learn BakerWrite speedwriting online.

We had a party in October to celebrate Mr Baker Thompson's 60th birthday. Great time had by all, particularly due to the fabulous Slinky Band and the astonishing magician, Sam Fitton.

This was a very international - and very lively - group of EAs who attended our two day 21st Century EA Masterclass at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dubai this month.

You can see more photos of other seminars at the company Facebook page.  It would be great if you would "like" the page so you will receive regular updates from me and also from my associates.

How can managers ensure the organisation benefits from employee training?

An effective manager who has invested money in training his/her staff will always take the trouble to follow up on this training.  Often the person trained needs support and input from the management to achieve their objectives.  At Baker Thompson we always ensure our friends leave with a clear action plan for their continuing development.

We encourage people to speak to their managers after their sessions, using the personal action plan as the basis for this discussion.

Here is what the manager could do:
  • respect and encourage their staff
  • understand their objectives and discuss how they fit into the management and organisation objectives
  • support any goal setting plans created by the person trained
  • ensure cooperation from colleagues for this development
  • be open-minded and prepared to accept change and work differently if necessary
  • if the management feels the goals are not relevant or achievable, don't dismiss them completely, be prepared to explain in a positive way and find alternative solutions

You can build a productive partnership between managers and PAs

During a administrators' workshop, I was asked by an aspiring PA what I thought she should be doing to move from her current role into a PA role.

I suggested that building relationships was key to her progress. She should collaborate and learn from colleagues and managers and aim to be seen as a professional in her field.

I advised her to join networking groups for PAs such as EuMA in Europe or Behind Every Leader in the USA. It is also a good idea to take advantage of social networks such as LinkedIn.  There are hundreds of discussion groups for PAs and many opportunities for learning.

I suggested she subscribe to good quality PA magazines and, of course, attend any training opportunities she is offered or requests.

We also discussed the possibility of her finding a mentor to advise and inspire her.

Find out more about how you can become a truly effective PA.

If we're not in touch over the next few weeks, I wish you a very happy Christmas and all the best for 2015.

Thank you so much for your support this year; it really is very much appreciated.

My calendar's filling up for next year and even a booking for 2016 (more news next time).
