Happy Valentine's Day from SOAR! We hope everyone feels the love today.
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO: EXECUTIVE BOARD
COVID-19 Relief Grant
After our last update, the SOAR Executive Board gave $4000 to two cancer patients/survivors who had been financially burdened due to COVID-19. Congratulations to Wendi Gonzalez and Anita Ahmad-Zai for being our recipients.
SOAR Chapter Halloween Social
The Executive Board hosted an online social event for all members of SOAR across our chapters on Halloween of 2020. We got to meet our members "face to face" and played some fun Halloween themed online games. We also took this opportunity to create virtual cards for Boston Children's Hospital,
raising almost $100 of donations.
Children's Book Reading Event
Taking advantage of the situation, SOAR attempted to help hospitals outside just the Greater Houston Area. In a joint event with our chapters, SOAR created a series of short videos of members reading children's stories for the patients and families at Dallas Children's Hospital just in time for the holiday season.
WHAT'S TO COME: EXECUTIVE BOARD
Origami Valentine's Fundraiser
SOAR's Executive Board hosted an Instagram Fundraiser in collaboration with the chapters to raise money for origami kits that were sent to the Kapi'olani Medical Center! We raised over $700 and shipped 92 kits. We also created video tutorials to send to the center so that the patients can follow along.
The Executive Board has a long term project that is slowly coming to development! We aim to create an app that curates playlists for cancer patients by using AI and collecting the patients' music taste and mood. the app will then sort the playlist by beats per minute or other emotion-changing features of music to make the patient either happy or calm. The app will also connect cancer patients with each other so that they can share music and talk to people on the same boat as they are without actually talking about cancer.
We're currently looking for those with backend experience in AI/machine learning! The application deadline has been extended to 2/19/2021.
As part of their annual hoodie sale fundraiser, DeBakey SOAR Chapter students raised $374 in profit, which was then donated directly to the American Cancer Foundation. In an effort to boost sales, the chapter also held a SOAR Hoodie Fundraiser Night over Zoom, where 24 members attended.
Memorial High School
While transitioning to having a hybrid style learning environment, Memorial SOAR Chapter students hosted a Christmas Destressathon Event over Zoom that served as a bonding social event and an opportunity for students to donate money for fundraising. Through the Destressathon, members and non-members alike learned more about SOAR's mission and the chapter's goals for coming year.
Thank you to all of our chapters for your hard work during the fall! DeBakey High School

What school do you go to? UC Berkeley Crumple or fold? Fold What would be your theme song and why? My theme song would be "Life's What You Make It" by Hannah Montana. What's your dream job? Why? My absolute dream job would be a blogger or starting some type of lifestyle company. In many different situations, I like to do my research by hearing about other peoples' stories and experiences, and I would love to do the same for others. Every person's viewpoints and contributions to a cause will be different, and I think that's what makes each blogger or influencer super unique. A lot of my hobbies include yoga, traveling, journaling, and baking, so I would love to inspire others who want to dive deeper into these hobbies, too! Why did you join SOAR? I joined SOAR because I'm passionate about making an impact on my community. Although I don't have any direct experiences with family or friends who have had cancer, I've seen the toil that it can take on the patient and the patient's family. This sense of empathy motivates me to try and do what I can do help others. It's also been super amazing to see the progress and impact that we've made since we started a couple years ago!

I joined SOAR because I've had close family members who have been directly affected by cancer, so it was a cause that's really close to my heart.
