The month that I turned 29, Yay!
With the Hills District we did something different in the weekend. Our squad joined the iconic feature event Cliff to Club ocean swim; a 2.5km swim at Suttons Beach, Redcliffe. It was a fabulous morning on a stunning sunny day and a very well-organized event.
With both riding and running we have double or triple bike/run days. Also this month in preparation for Ironman Australia it was time for the "Kenyan run day"; a run day with at least two running workouts. It's a great way to get mileage up instead of just a really long run. This also helps keep the run quality up and it is generally less risk for injury as opposed to just going long and slow.
A Kenyan run day would look like:
- Early morning easy wake up run
- Late morning: a speed workout, hills repeats or fartlek workout
- A non stop run starting slowly but building to finish
Family always comes first, wherever your adventures takes you. Due to a medical situation of a family member I decided to return home earlier. Having the support of my family and friends helps me to achieve success in sport. They are there when I need them most. When I heard about my very sick family member I decided to return home and a day later I was there. It was the right decision.
Support for my family but also a moment to be with my friends again. I surprised them on their weekend together which was a lot of fun!
Back in the Netherlands, back on the flat, and back on very smooth road surfaces. The wind is the only challenge! Here I realize how tough riding was in Brisbane with all the hills and rough road surfaces.
But if I want to become a bike monster, the tougher the better! Here in the Netherlands, I am best friends with mister Turbo again. Very happy that a new one was waiting for me; the Tacx Neo Smart. A very powerful and silent cycle trainer.
Because I came home earlier I am not racing Ironman Australia anymore. Instead, I am racing Challenge Heilbronn on May 19th. After this race I fly back to the Aussies for a long week to race Ironman Cairns on June 9th!
